The bruiser of Nevada volleyball

VolleyballSo far this season, that plan has worked as Sipherd has increased her career kills to 929 from 800

Sipherd also has 100 career digs, 419 blocks and 1196.5 points.

As a freshman, Sipherd admitted she was very intimidated, but knew she could play at the collegiate level at the same time.

However, she is no longer an intimidated freshman.

Now she is a team leader who is more confident and more experienced on and off of the court Scruggs said.

“She sets a good example for the young girls by always being in the gym, battling through injuries, and I know that after she leaves the program she will always care about what happens here,” Scruggs said.

In 2006, Sipherd had both of her knees operated on, but managed to play in every match.

The knees did not slow her production in the matches either, as she recorded some of the best stats of her career.

She accumulated 308 kills, had a team-leading .283 attack percentage and averaged 1.41 blocks per game, which was fourth in the Western Athletic Conference.

As a captain, Sipherd showed her toughness and dedication against No. 22 New Mexico State last season.

Just a few days before the match, her grandmother died but Sipherd played anyway. She was able to contribute to a key victory as she recorded 14 kills and seven block assists.

After the game, she told the Nevada Appeal she felt like she was high on volleyball.

Sipherd credits her volleyball success to her family.

“My family has always been there to support me,” Sipherd said. “They go to almost every game.”

Scruggs feels that part of her maturing is that she has learned to better manage her emotions.

“It has been really fun seeing her develop over the years,” Scruggs said. “She is passionate, competitive and has been a key component to the progress of this program.”
