Wolf Pack soccer takes out Rebels, 3-0

The Wolf Pack soccer team added a much needed win Sunday afternoon as it beat UNLV 3-0. This is the first win Nevada has had in its all time series record with the Rebels.

Freshman Christen Drummond had the first two goals for Nevada and Karen Zmirak scored the third.

The first goal was in the 55th minute of the game as Drummond kicked the ball to the left of the net. UNLV defender LeChere Anglin was waiting to knock it away, but instead headed it directly into the goal.

“We’ve talked about serving the ball behind the other team’s defense, especially when we are in the box. When you do that it sets you up for something exactly like what happened,” interim head coach Antoinette Marjanovic said.

Drummond was also responsible for the next goal in the 62nd minute as she received a pass from Kenisha Warren. Drummond was directly in front of a Rebel defender and had a wide open shot to the top right corner of the net.

The third goal was made by Karen Zmirak as she fought her way through a cluster of players to score in the 70th minute.

“At half time we talked about capitalizing on our opportunities. We weren’t able to do it in the first half, but in the second half we did a good job and things worked out in our favor,” Marjanovic said.

The first half was physically intense and was plagued with injuries as midfielder/defender Devin Noe and forward Samantha Miller were both taken out of the game.

Noe was fighting for a ball when she sustained a knee injury. Her status is currently unknown.

Miller was knocked over after going for a ball on the sideline and landed on her shoulder, popping it out of place. Marjanovic said that Miller would be fine and in good shape for Friday’s game against Northern Arizona.

Freshman goalkeeper Marie Cove recorded four saves in the game as the Wolf Pack out shot the Rebels 13-12 and 6-4 in shots on goal.
