The last two weeks have been quite different. Ever since that first column came out, I’ve been hounded by the college newspaper paparazzi, not to mention all the girls that swarm me every time I leave my house.
OK, so none of that actually happens at all. But I have started playing keyboards for My Messenger and that’s a bit strange. I’ve never actually played keyboard in a live band, only at home – I was more than a little nervous.
And on top of not knowing the songs perfectly, I don’t really look like the kind of guy who would be playing piano for an indie/folk band. So naturally, in my head, I thought everyone would be staring at me and watching everything I did and realizing I’m not very good at what I’m doing. It’s neurotic and self-centered, but that’s how I felt. It’s the same reason I try my best to say nothing in school.
But so far I’ve played two shows with My Messenger, and while both were fun, they were also very different.
The first one wasn’t so good. There were numerous technical malfunctions with the guitars and I honestly didn’t really know what I was doing. On at least three of the songs I turned myself all the way down and just pretended to be playing. It’s sad, I know.
Luckily, there weren’t many people there at any one time, and when there were, they weren’t paying attention.
The next show went much better. Despite not really practicing until the day of the show - I was very depressed over my large ceramic tiger, El Tigre, being stolen - I somehow knew the songs better than I had the previous week. I only had to turn myself down and pretend to play on one song. And it’s a good thing I did better because people actually showed up to that one.
But it’s hard to find time to practice. We’ve got five people in the band and that means five different schedules. My class schedule is not very orderly and I have a lot of reading to do this semester. I don’t plan on doing it on the weekend - and even if I did, it wouldn’t get done - so that’s what weeknights are for. I can’t spend two hours practicing every day when I need to be reading “The Mabinogion” or something equally exciting.
Hopefully before our next show (which I believe to be sometime in October) we can practice a few times so I can actually know exactly what I’m supposed to do. That is, if I can find the time.
