Nevada falls short of upset in Boise, 69-67

BOISE, Idaho — In the highest scoring game in Division-I history, the Boise State Broncos defeated the Nevada 69-67 on Sunday night in quadruple overtime.

“It was a whale of a ball game,” Nevada coach Chris Ault said. “Boise is a great team and this is a great town. I just love this atmosphere. I enjoy it. I don’t know how many games they’ve won on the blue, but they’ve done a great job.”

In the fourth overtime Boise State running back Ian Johnson scored from 1-yard out to make it 67-61. The Broncos then followed it up with a two-point conversion that made it 69-61.

Nevada responded when Luke Lippincott ran in a seven-yard touchdown, but freshman quarterback Colin Kaepernick was sacked on the attempted two-point conversion, giving the win to Boise State.

“They were a very good team and we just didn’t come out on top,” junior offensive lineman Greg Hall said.

The four overtimes were a smorgasbord of scoring – the teams scored four touchdowns on five plays in the first two extra frames.

Lippincott started with a 25 yard touchdown run on Nevada’s first play and Boise State responding by scoring on the first play of its next two possessions. After an incomplete pass, Kaepernick scrambled 25 yards for another touchdown.

In the third overtime both teams hit field goals to keep the score tied at 61-61.

Nevada finished the game with 639 total yards and Boise State finished with 627.

“We have real powerful offense,” Wolf Pack receiver Marko Mitchell said.

Mitchell led Nevada’s receiving corps. with four receptions for 161 yards and one touchdown.

Kaepernick threw for 243 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for two more.

“It is very frustrating,” Kaepernick said of losing by two points. “We played our hearts out. To come up two points short, that’s hard to swallow.”

Lippincott ran for 187 yards and four touchdowns.

“The offensive line had the best game they’ve ever played,” Lippincott said. “I felt like it was a moral victory for us.”

The exciting game featured ten plays of 25 yards or more.

Nevada trailed nearly the entire game until 3:40 left in the fourth quarter when Brett Jaekle kicked a 35-yard field goal to make the score 44-41 Nevada.

That field goal was set up by Ezra Butler, who forced Boise State’s Ian Johnson to fumble and recovered it on Nevada’s 31-yard-line.

Nevada had a chance to take the lead early in the fourth quarter after Mike McCoy caught a 41-yard pass from Kaepernick to tie 34-34, but Brett Jaekle’s extra point was blocked by Boise State’s Dan Gore.

Nevada trailed by as many as 14 points in the second quarter after Boise State quarterback Taylor Tharp hit Sherm Blaser for a 25-yard touchdown to make it 28-14.

With the loss, Nevada falls to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in WAC play and Boise State improves to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in WAC play.
