The Wolf Pack went on the road to open up conference play this weekend, but returned home on a low after it lost to Hawaii 3-0 Friday night and San Jose State 2-1 Sunday afternoon. Nevada is now 4-7-1 on the season.
Hawaii dominated Friday’s game as it outshot Nevada 18-7 and 5-1 in shots on goal and brought Nevada’s three-game winning streak to an end.
The Rainbows had jumped to a commanding 2-0 lead by the 16th minute of the game after it made two goals in less than two minutes.
The first one came from Hawaii’s Ambree Ako as she dribbled her way to a one-on-one matchup with freshman goalkeeper Marie Cove and slipped it past her.
Taryn Fukuroku made Hawaii’s second goal as she finished a corner kick from teammate Nicole Mikula.
Junior Karen Zmirak had the lone shot on goal for the Wolf Pack.
Sunday’s game resembled many of Nevada’s losses so far this season; it tied its opponent in shots and held the advantage shots on goal, but still could not make the ball go where they wanted it.
San Jose took an early lead as it also scored off a corner kick in the eighth minute. And while the Wolf Pack had its chance to tie the game in the ninth minute, the break did not come until the 82nd minute when Blaine Dugan was able to wrap a shot around the Spartans’ goalkeeper.
Junior Jessica Thompson had the assist on the play, which now makes her first in the all-time record books for most career assists with 12. Lauren Kinneman, who played for Nevada from 2003 to 2006, held the previous record with 11 career assists.
However, San Jose State responded to the tied score and fired in the game-winning goal two minutes later.
Sarah Hunt, who had her first start of the season for the Wolf Pack, pushed the initial shot away from the net but the Spartans’ Kim Johnston was running up the field and caught the deflection and put it past Hunt.
Hunt finished the game with four saves.
