Nevada adds conference wins

Volleyball

The Nevada volleyball team returned to Virginia Street Gym last week after spending three weeks on the road. The Wolf Pack won both games 3-0, pulling into a tie for third overall in the Western Athletic Conference. On Saturday, the Wolf Pack swept a tough Utah State team that entered the game with a 6-2 record in the WAC.

“It was a big win,” Nevada coach Devin Scruggs said.

Teal Ericson, who had a team-high 14 kills in the match, called the victory an “important win.”

After starting the season 4-6, the Wolf Pack has won five of six to rise in the standings.

The recent success could be because of Nevada’s defensive play in matches. Against the Aggies, the Wolf Pack recorded 10 blocks to Utah State’s 9.5. Ericson said that she was surprised because Utah State usually uses three players to block like teams do in men’s leagues. Nevada uses two players to block.

The blocks are translating into a low opponent attack percentage.

The Wolf Pack held Fresno State to a .102 attack percentage and Utah State to .067 overall. In game one of the Fresno State game Nevada actually had a lower attack percentage but was still able to pull out the victory because of its defense. Nevada also did very well in the defensive digs category, accumulating 97 in the two matches combined. Allison Hernandez had a team high with 33 in the two matches. Utah State had 38 digs and Fresno State had 34 digs.

The Wolf Pack’s return to Reno followed a successful five-game road trip where the Pack went 3-2. Still, Scruggs said it was nice being back home.

“The crowd was fun,” Scruggs said.
