Blocking helps Wolf Pack push NMSU to five games

The Nevada volleyball team went 1-1 on the weekend as it played on the road against No. 18 New Mexico State Thursday night and Louisiana Tech Saturday night.

The Wolf Pack (10-8, 7-4 Western Athletic Conference) was blown away in three games against New Mexico State at home on Sept. 15, and it looked like the Wolf Pack would suffer a similar fate on Thursday after losing the first two games by scores of 30-27 and 30-18, respectively.

Instead, the Wolf Pack fought back to win games three and four before falling 17-15 in the final match.

Most notably, the Wolf Pack improved its block.

In the match against New Mexico State, Nevada had a season-high 19.5 blocks. It was also 7.5 blocks more than the Aggies had.

In the first matchup, Nevada only had 9.5 blocks.

Freshman Lindsay Baldwin led Nevada with nine blocks and sophomore Jordan Staker recorded seven blocks.

In Nevada’s match against Louisiana Tech, the Wolf Pack accumulated 12.5 blocks, which was 2.5 more than Louisiana Tech’s 10.

Karly Sipherd led the team with six blocks in the match.

Nevada will look to continue to show its new and improved blocking defense against Idaho Thursday at the Virginia Street Gym.
