With a record of 5-8-1 (1-3 Western Athletic Conference), the Nevada soccer team’s play hasn’t been as strong as expected coming off last season’s WAC championship.
Part of the problem is a lack of concentration, according to interim coach Antoinette Marjanovic.
One recent example was ophomore defender Whitney Gilson’s header into her own goal on Sunday against Louisiana Tech. The Wolf Pack won the game 4-1, Gilson’s own-goal gave Louisiana Tech its only score.
Marjanovic attributed the goal to miscommunication on the part of freshman goalkeeper Marie Cove.
“At halftime we said that was an unacceptable goal,” Marjanovic said.
But Marjanovic said she saw almost immediate improvement in Cove’s play. Marjanovic said at the start of the second half, Cove communicated with the rest of her team and, as a result, cleared the ball out better.
“[We’re] just not concentrating for 90 minutes,” Marjanovic said.
Marjanovic added that mistakes are common in soccer because of the length most players are in the game at one time.
Nevada outshoots Lady Techsters
The Wolf Pack’s 4-1 win against the Lady Techsters snapped a three-game losing streak.
One of the main factors in the victory was the Pack’s shooting supremacy.
It took 21 shots, 12 on goal and held the Lady Techsters to only one shot on goal for the entire game.
Leading the Pack was freshman forward/midfielder Jill Erickson, who had six shots, three shots on goal and one goal.
Seconding Erickson was Jessica Thompson, who took four shots, two on goal and had a goal and an assist.
Godwin sits out for the first time since ’06 NCAA tournament
Before last Sunday, junior defender Patrice Godwin was on track to play every minute of the season. Things changed for her near the end of Sunday’s game.
Marajanovic said the main reason for pulling her from the game was to give Godwin a rest.
“When I first went out I was like ‘Hey, I’m not used to this,’” Godwin said. “Just when I started getting comfortable I went back in.”
Godwin sat out for about two minutes near the end of the game, until she was put back in because her replacement was getting tired.
“I just wanted to give her a break,” Marjanovic said.
Smith receives yellow card
Freshman defender Erin Smith received the first Wolf Pack yellow card of the season last Friday against Utah State.
Smith received the card when she collided with the Aggies goalkeeper while trying to score a goal. The keeper jumped on the ball, Smith had too much momentum to stop on time, and drew the foul.
“She [the Aggies keeper] just ended up getting to it before me,” Smith said.
Marjanovic said the penalty wasn’t typical for the team.
“We’re the type of team that if we’re going to tackle someone, we’re going to do it clean,” she said.
