The Nevada baseball team hit the field for the first time on Saturday after taking second in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament in May.
“It was a good opportunity for our guys to be in the same dug out,” Nevada coach Gary Powers said. “It was a really good start for us. We have a lot of competition starting to develop within our team.”
The Wolf Pack, who finished 35-26 and 15-9 in the WAC last season, scrimmaged Lassen College at Peccole Park after playing numerous intrasquad scrimmages this fall. Nevada, though, saw Mother Nature cancel the first scrimmage earlier this month when the Pack was scheduled to play Sierra College.
Powers said the 18-inning scrimmage helped the first-year players adjust to the college atmosphere and it also presented a chance to players who either redshirted or were injured last season.
“It was good to play some other team besides playing ourselves,” Powers said. “They’re all going to help us.”
Powers said he was pleased with Nevada’s pitching against Lassen, which involved first-year hurlers.
“We wanted to see how they would respond that way,” Powers added. “For the most part, I was real happy.”
The 26th-year coach pointed out Nevada’s consistency on offense and intensity for all 18 innings. Powers said Nevada tallied 58 total hits.
“The thing that I’m most happy about was all the quality at bats for 18 innings,” Powers said. “They played with intensity. For the first time out, our group of guys maintained their focus and intensity the whole time.”
Matt Bowman, a 2004 Dayton graduate who spent most of last season on the disabled list with a shoulder/arm injury, picked up where he left off at the beginning of the 2007 campaign. Bowman hit for the cycle, going four for seven.
“It was nice to get a couple guys out there who sat out and didn’t get to play last year,” Powers said.
Nevada hosts Cosumnes River College in a scrimmage on Friday at noon and will host Feather River Community College next week.
