The Rev. Denise Cordova gave students insight and laughter as part of the Nevada Speaker Series, discussing “Homosexuality in Christiandom” in the Pine Lounge Tuesday.
About 50 people came to hear her speak about the struggles of being a Christian and being gay.
“It was a new spin on a very old and ongoing subject,” said Christina Townsend, a mechanical engineering and art major. “It’s good to see the other side of that.”
Cordova encouraged audience members to participate as she read and interpreted Bible verses in their historical and cultural contexts, urging everyone to see past the priming of society.
Cordova emphasized that Jesus never mentioned homosexuality, only taught acceptance and love.
“This is my truth, truth I’ve studied, truth I’ve experienced, the truth for me,” Cordova said.
Her imitation of a conservative Southern preacher’s hallelujahs and amens gave the Pine Lounge a fun and friendly atmosphere. Stories of her own struggles, being homosexual and growing up in a Catholic family, gave personal insight and inspiration.
“The bottom line is you have to question,” Cordova reiterated to students. “If you don’t believe me, fine! But search it out for yourself.”
Cordova is the equal opportunity specialist in the Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Office at the University of Nevada, Reno. She is a reverend at Light of the Soul Christian Ministries. Flipside Programmer Tim Taycher chose Cordova as part of the Nevada Speaker Series “to highlight the amazing people we have on campus.
