Yearly game unwinds Pack players

Nevada volleyball was able to unwind Saturday with its annual alumni game. Nevada volleyball players, combined with alumni, played a pick-up game at the Virginia Street Gym. Nevada volleyball coach Devin Scruggs started the tradition 11 years ago.

“It’s always a lot of fun,” Scruggs said. “It’s good practice for our current players and a good opportunity for our alumni to come back and play.”

The Wolf Pack players took part in some camaraderie the night before at Archie’s Bar and Grill. July Pickett is a former Nevada volleyball player (1988-1991) and current owner of Archies.

“It’s a great gathering event,” Pickett said. “It’s great to have something in common with these younger players. I love sharing old stories with everyone.”

Pack volleyball barbecued after the game before migrating to Mackay Stadium to watch the Nevada football team play Idaho.

“This is a great day,” Scruggs said. “Started with the alumni game, now we can enjoy a little football and barbecue before playing Boise State.”

Defensive star

Alison Hernandez has given the Pack a much-needed defensive presence. Since changing positions early in the season, Hernandez has led the Pack in digs for 17 straight games.

“She has been such a steady player,” Scruggs said. “We’re very pleased with her play. She is turning into a main constant on defense.”

Hernandez started the season at outside hitter before moving to libero.

She became the fourth player in school history to reach 28 digs in a single game at Idaho, Sept. 20. Her 28 digs was a career high.

“We’ve really upped the intensity,” Hernandez said. “Our attitude is a lot better. We’re making winning a habit.”

Hernandez’s 4.87 digs per game is third best in conference. She has at least ten digs in 16-of-18 matches. She has four 20-dig games this season.

Rainbow Wahine

Nevada will host No. 11 Hawaii on Thursday. The Rainbow Wahine are 16-0 against Scruggs.

“Hawaii is a phenomenal team,” Scruggs said. “I love to compete with them, but we didn’t when we were in Hawaii.”

Nevada last played Hawaii on Oct. 5. The Wolf Pack was swept in three games.

Hawaii’s outside hitter Jamie Houston leads the WAC in kills per game, 5.65 and attacking percentage at 857.235.

“If we are going to advance to the NCAA tournament,” Miller said, “we’re going to have to beat teams like Hawaii.”
