Rock fans rejoiced as screaming metal bands, mosh pits and models took the stage at the Battle of the Bands Saturday afternoon, held at the Warehouse in Carson City.
The battle kicked off Saturday afternoon. In addition to local bands battling, a model contest was held.
Rockstar, a Carson City-based clothing company, hosted the contest to advertise the clothing brand name and give an outlet for aspiring musicians.
Anthony Sullivan, a 25-year-old co-founder of Rockstar, has participated in similar battles before and wanted to bring it to the Carson area.
“This is our first Rockstar hosted Battle of the Bands,” Sullivan said. “And our bigger purpose for this event has always just been to give kids something to do.”
Over 700 tickets were sold online. Concertgoers rolled in and were greeted by pizza concession stands, a Guitar Hero video game area and a photo booth to pose with friends.
The main attraction featured 10 local bands who signed up via MySpace for a chance to win $250 in cash, Rockstar merchandise and 10 hours of free recording time at a nearby studio.
From the metal sounds of Drunken Assumption to the saxophones of ska band, The Salsa Sharks, the show had something to offer from every rock genre.
“It’s a very different mix of music that I wasn’t expecting,” Stephen Crane, an 18-year-old biology major at the University of Nevada, Reno, said. “But it all works well together somehow.”
Participating bands not only got a chance to win prizes, but also won exposure.
“This is great exposure for any band,” Travis Stewart, a 25-year-old biochemistry major at UNR and lead singer of metal band, Dorcia, said. “With this variety of bands, you get a wide variety of people and that is extremely important to any band starting out.”
The modeling contest was held in between the 10 band sets. The top 10 contestants from an online competition strutted on stage, wearing the latest designs from Rockstar, competing for the chance to appear on the front cover of the next catalog.
Savannah Janowski, a 23-year-old business major at UNR and model contestant, said she was excited to walk the catwalk and had fun working the crowd.
“It’s such a rush when you’re up there in front of everyone and all eyes are on you,” Janowski said. “I couldn’t keep a straight face. I smiled and laughed the whole time.”
At the end of the event, the crowd’s votes were tallied. Dorcia took top band and Janowski was voted top model.
Jen McCrosay, a 24-year-old co-founder of Rockstar, said she was pleased with the events success.
“It was amazing,” McCrosay said. “We couldn’t ask for a better crowd or better bands. We’re trying to make this an annual event, so you can definitely look forward to more from us.”
