Orgasms are to sex as frosting is to cupcakes

Karah MugWhat is an orgasm?

It’s not something you can see, hold, hear or touch. You can’t control exactly when and how an orgasm will occur, unless you dedicate much of your life to this skill. Some people can have multiple orgasms and some consider themselves lucky if they get one at all. Half of humans’ orgasms are necessary for procreation, while the other half could have them or not have them and no one would know the difference (except for themselves, of course).

So we know that an orgasm is the reason most people want to have sex. Sex without an orgasm is like a cupcake without the delicious icing on top. I’ve heard an orgasm can be like an explosion. That gave me the image of fireworks exploding inside of people’s bodies. This sounded too dangerous to be true, so I decided to do some research on this miracle of human life.

An orgasm is described as intense physical pleasure controlled by the autonomic nervous system. It is defined by a cycle of pelvic muscle contractions that can cause muscle spasms in other parts of the body and a euphoric sensation. During an orgasm, a man ejaculates and semen is released, and thus the circle of life repeats itself. When a woman has an orgasm, everyone has fun, but nothing biological is achieved.

So why do women have orgasms, anyway?

One theory suggests that it promotes physical intimacy and attachment between the male and female so they will have a stronger bond as a pair. This theory by Desmond Morris says that since it’s harder for women to have an orgasm than it is for a man, they will be more likely to stay with partners who are patient, smart and creative rather than big and manly. So if you trust in this theory, you can say that women have orgasms for the betterment of the species.

While there isn’t really a proven reason for women to have orgasms, it’s still pretty cool. Female orgasms generally last longer than males’. As they get closer to orgasm, the outside of the vagina tightens and the inside gets bigger. Female orgasms are defined by the contraction of the muscles in the vagina, uterus, anus and pelvis. With all of those crazy things happening, you can tell if you’ve had one or not.

Orgasms also fill you with pleasure and suck the energy right out of you. Turns out that’s not just because you’re exerting more energy than you normally would lying in bed. This comes from releasing a hormone called prolactin, which makes you sleepy like tryptophan after eating turkey.

Yes, orgasms are like Thanksgiving. You get excited for them, they make you happy and fulfilled (at least temporarily), and then they lull you to sleep.
