Tomorrow Stoney’s hosts pop-punk group The Starting Line, who were touring when most kids their age were begging their parents for car keys. The Pennsylvania band formed in 1999 when its members were 14. Since then, they’ve released three albums, two EPs and been a regular fixture at summer music festival, The Van’s Warped Tour. Lead singer, Kenny Vasoli talked to The Nevada Sagebrush about playing in Reno, starting to play music so early and being on the road with the band Paramore, who’s sitting the Reno date out.
The Nevada Sagebrush: Have you played in Reno before?
Kenny Vasoli: We’ve played in Reno a couple times. I liked it. Pretty much any place that we can gamble, we like.
NS: Did you win any money?
KV: I definitely didn’t win any large amount. I would have remembered that.
NS: What game do you play?
KV: I’m a roulette guy, hands down. Every now and then we’ll have variations, but we always have our favorite numbers that we play. Mine is 23, because I am 23 and that movie with Jim Carrey. I thought it was a hilarious concept for a movie.
NS: How long have you been on tour?
KV: Almost a week. We’ve been getting along really well with everybody, the people, the bands and musicians. I’ve become a really big Paramore fan.
NS: Is this the first time you’ve toured together?
KV: No, we were on Warped Tour with them. We actually had the tour planned before Warped Tour. I’d never really heard them before and I was like, these kids are just going to be typical. I didn’t really expect too much from it, but they blow me away every time I see them.
NS: It’s funny you call them ‘kids.’ Didn’t you start playing when you were 14?
KV: I started playing in this band when we were 14. I know what we sounded like when we were 14. They sound way better than we did at that age. They sound better than we do now. (Laughs)
NS: Do you feel like you missed anything starting so young?
KV: All I had to do was finish up high school and the rest of the band was ready to go on the road. I never had to worry what college I would apply to or what I would be after college if this didn’t work out. So I’m really grateful I got started at such an early age.
NS: What would you have done if it didn’t work out?
KV: I probably would have gotten into electrical engineering. That’s what my dad does and him and my grandfather started an electric company. I probably would have worked for them. You know, electricity’s cool, but I like playing music a little more.
NS: How has this tour gone so far?
KV: It’s really cool. I’m always kind of wary about how a crowd’s going to react to us with a band like Paramore. You’re not exactly sure how the crowd’s going to vibe us, but so far, the crowd’s just been getting better and better. The other night in Cleveland was one of the best shows in a long time.
NS: What do you expect for the last leg of your tour?
KV: I expect it to get better and better. We’re growing great bonds with everyone on tour.
NS: So, you’re playing at Stoney’s?
KV: Yeah, what’s the pointers? What are the kids like?
NS: Every concert I’ve been to in Reno has had a pretty enthusiastic showing.
KV: That’s awesome. Well, we’ll be sure to bring our A-game.
