News SoccerNevada freshman goalkeeper Marie Cove received a red card in Sunday’s game against the Fresno State Bulldogs for colliding with a Fresno player. According to head coach Antoinette Marjanovic, whenever a foul is committed by the last player between the goal and the ball, the fouling player automatically receives a red card.

“Technically it shouldn’t have resulted in a foul because the ball had already left the other player’s foot,” Marjanovic said. “It shouldn’t have resulted in a foul because they both collided in the end because they were both going for the ball.”

Marjanovic added that the ball went wide and it should not have been a penalty kick for the Bulldogs.

Cove’s red card suspended her from the first game of the Western Athletic Conference tournament. Cove sitting out forced junior keeper Sarah Hunt into the goalie box again.

Marjanovic said that the team will be doing “nothing differently” in the opening game of the WAC tournament.

“Sarah’s a good keeper,” Marjanovic said. “She’s very capable, she’s had some experience this year, so we should be fine.”

Nevada slides into WAC tournament
The Wolf Pack managed to secure a slot in the WAC tournament, but it wasn’t guaranteed. After Sunday’s lost to Fresno State, its position in the tournament was in jeopardy.

If Nevada had won, its place would have been secured, but with the loss it came down to the outcome of Hawaii’s match against Boise State.

Hawaii trounced Boise State 7-0, which opened the door for the Wolf Pack.

“We had to rely on someone else to get the job done for us,” said Marjanovic.

Now that the regular season is over, the team is hoping to make a new start.

“Like I told the team [Sunday] night in a text message it’s the start of a new season now,” Marjanovic said. “Anything can happen in the WAC tournament.”

Marjanovic wasn’t sure who the Pack would be facing first, but said she was “confident” they could get the win.

Pack bids farewell to its seniors
Sunday’s game against Fresno State was the last home game of the season for Nevada. For seniors Blaine Dugan, Jessica Wilcox and Kenishia Warren, it was the last time they would suit up for a game at Mackay stadium.

Before Sunday’s match began, announcers read the names and some key statistics of each of the graduating seniors.

“I think [we’ll be hurt by losing] all three of them,” Marjanovic said. “They’re all going to be missed next year.”

In 2003, her first year at Nevada, Wilcox used her redshirt year. Since then, the defender has racked up 39 shots, four goals and three assists. She spent this year out with a knee injury.

Warren arrived from Australia in 2006, and joined the squad as a midfielder. Since coming to Nevada she has turned in 44 shots, five goals and five assists. This year, she took 26 shots, scored four goals and had three assists.

Midfielder Blaine Dugan has been a member of the Pack since 2004. She has a total of 86 shots, five goals and five assists. This year she has 20 shots, three goals and one assist.

“Whenever you lose any kind of seniors it’s kinda difficult just because they’re all great student athletes and they’re all great players for you,” Marjanovic said.

Marjanovic said there will be seven new players added to next year’s team, but the current players are going to be expected to step up and take over the roles of the graduating seniors.

“More it’s going to be the current players who are replacing the seniors that are leaving this year,” Marjanovic said.
