The Nevada women’s basketball team entered Sunday’s game against San Diego State expecting a defensive contest, and they got one in 67-61 loss to the Aztecs.
After the two teams went back and forth for the first six minutes, the Aztecs controlled much of the first half, leading by as many as five at 26-21 with just under eight minutes remaining.
But Nevada guard Dellena Criner scored five points to spark a 13-3 run that allowed the Wolf Pack to grab a 34-29 lead. The Wolf Pack led 36-34 at halftime.
Nevada was unable to hold on to its lead, however.
After the Wolf Pack extended its lead to 43-36 with five quick points to open the second half, the Aztecs ran off a 14-2 run to take a 50-45 lead with 8:15 remaining in the game.
Nevada couldn’t overcome the deficit.
The Wolf Pack’s last chance to take the game came with just 1:22 left. Junior guard Brandi Fitzgerald drained a pair of free throws to cut the Aztec’s lead to two at 61-59.
The Wolf Pack could have tied the game with a defensive stop, but Marianne Lombardi fouled on the next possession, and two free throws by San Diego senior center Allison Duffy. She sank both her shots, giving the Aztecs a 63-59 lead, and sealed the Wolf Pack’s fate.
Johnna Ward had a chance to tie the game at 64 with a long shot with 11 seconds left, but she missed. A free throw by junior guard Tamika Lipford put the Aztecs up by four with nine seconds remaining and the Pack was unable to find the net again.
San Diego sophomore guard Quenese Davis led all scorers with 17 points and four steals in 37 minutes.
The Wolf Pack was led by Cherlanda Franklin, who had 12 points and three steals.
“I knew both teams would be aggressive, but (the game would be decided by) who would be more aggressive,” Nevada cach Kim Gervasoni said. “Obviously, it wasn’t us.”
