Even Reno has places for romantic dates

Karah MugUnless you are a visitor or fascinated by the lives of students at the University of Nevada, Reno, we all have something in common: We are residents of Reno.

We may not have the same gender, history, sexual preference, etc., but we all reside in this fair city, and unless you own a private jet or don’t mind driving long distances to go out, we all meet and date in this city. We may not have many world class restaurants or romantic little bistros, but we do have a McDonald’s, an airport and at least five dining options on campus.

Just kidding.

At first glance Reno may not be a very good city for going out and falling in love. But once you go out and explore the town by car or foot, you will begin to think that you are in a picture perfect, CW series-worthy town, rather than a big little city best known by television’s “Reno 911.” While that is probably an exaggeration, you will indeed find that there is more than meets the eye.

For a first date people often find that being cornered in a dimly lit, foreign menu-ed restaurant is intimidating. It’s best to keep things casual, light and with plenty of escape routes just in case your hot date turns into an angry, ranting jerk or a pervy, horny creep. Both are prevalent in college atmospheres and in life.

Walking downtown by the Truckee River is a nice atmosphere as long as there isn’t several feet of snow piled on the ground. There is always something going on there and it always has plenty of coffee places, bars, antique stores, high school-aged punks and hobos. Can you think of a better date?

In case you didn’t know, there is a museum in Reno. It’s called the Nevada Museum of Art and is on Liberty Street. This is a good way to find things out about people on a first date. They don’t have to love the same art as you do for the two of you to be compatible and they don’t even have to pretend to understand it, but I’ve found that getting reactions on art from people can sometimes reveal how creative, open-minded or cultured they are. And sometimes it can reveal how they are none of the above.

Once you move past the fear of dating a serial killer or a part-time stripper and crackhead, you can move on to better and more romantic things. Restaurants like the Stonehouse Café, Skyline Café and the Pasta Mill provide quiet, intimate spaces for you to fill your tummies, your minds and your hearts with love for your newfound favorite date.

If you find yourself growing fat from numerous dinners and desserts, I’d recommend a walk over to the university to check out what’s playing in the Church Fine Arts building. There are always shows and concerts (several are free) for students to attend. Think of how much bootie you’ll get from saturating your new girl’s senses with food (don’t forget the wine), music and art.

Sounds like true love in the making to me – or at least memorable foreplay.
