SPORTS BRIEFS: Nevada women go down to Zags

The Nevada women’s basketball team lost to Gonzaga 93-55 on Saturday in Spokane, Wash.

Dellena Criner led the Wolf Pack with 15 points and Brandi Fitzgerald added 10, but the Wolf Pack shot less than 33 percent from the field while the Bulldogs shot better than 54 percent.

The Wolf Pack was also outrebounded 46-28.

The Wolf Pack (2-2) led 11-9 early in the game, but the Bulldogs used a 28-5 run to take control of the game. The Wolf Pack went scoreless for almost five minutes at one point during the run.

Volleyball falls in semis

After beating Idaho in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament, the Nevada volleyball team fell in three games to No. 1-seed Hawaii in the semifinals.

The Wolf Pack lost the first two games 30-27 and 30-28, respectively, before falling 30-21 in the deciding game.

Senior middle blocker Karly Sipherd led the Wolf Pack with 13 kills. Lindsay Baldwin added 11 and Teal Ericson chipped in 10 in the loss.

The Wolf Pack (16-11) must wait until Sunday to see if it gets an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Seniors Sipherd and Ericson were named first team All-WAC on Wednesday. Baldwin made the All-Freshman team.

Kemp player of the week

Wolf Pack guard Marcelus Kemp was named WAC player of the week after scoring 35 points and leading the Nevada men’s basketball team to a pair of wins.

Kemp scored 12 points on 6 of 10 shooting in a 77-68 win against UC Irvine on Tuesday. He followed that up with a season-high 23 points against Santa Clara on Saturday in a 67-54 win.

Kemp scored 16 of his 23 points in the second half against the Broncos.
