The Nevada women’s basketball team won its ninth straight home game Saturday by beating New Mexico State 83-76 in overtime, at Lawlor Events Center.
“I’m on a high right now,” forward Cherlanda Franklin said. “We played our butts off.” The men’s basketball team won at Louisiana Tech, 83-70.
The women’s team outscored the Aggies 13-6 in overtime. Mikail Price led Nevada with 20 points, shooting 16-of-18 from the free throw line.
Nevada improved to 14-5, 5-1 in conference. The Pack is off to its best start since joining the Western Athletic Conference in 2001.
In overtime the teams exchanged lead changes but with 20 seconds left and Nevada up by two, Cherlanda Franklin threw a over-head, half-court pass to Dellena Criner who was flagrantly fouled from behind.
“We were joking before the game about who was going to make a deep pass,” Nevada coach Kim Gervasoni said. “I didn’t see it coming.”
Criner made both her free throws and Price added with two more, after another inbound because of the flagrant foul.
The Aggies started the game on a 24-10 run in the first eight minutes.
Nevada’s primary offensive threat and WAC leading scorer Criner got into early foul trouble by committing two fouls in the game’s first three minutes. Gervasoni sat Criner the rest of the half. New Mexico State took advantage of Criner’s absence and size advantage. The Aggies out rebounded Nevada 30-13 in the first half, but the Pack adjusted to having its star on the bench and cut the Aggies lead to seven at half.
New Mexico State led throughout but with 4:27 left Price nailed a jumper to tie the game at 64-64.
With 40 seconds left and Nevada up by one, Madison Spence took back the lead for the Aggies by hitting a 3-pointer. Johnna Ward answered by penetrating the Aggie defense and connecting on an off-balanced lay-up.
New Mexico State had one more chance but Price stood strong in the paint, getting the referee to call a charge.
“We all try to take a charge each game,” Price said. “It gets the crowd pumped.”
The game moves the Pack to within one game of first place Fresno State. Nevada’s next game is in Fresno Thursday at 7 pm.
