The Nevada rifle team defeated the University Texas, El Paso Sunday, 4590-4555, for the seventh time this season, at the gun range on campus.“Not bad for four days of shooting,” Nevada coach Fred Harvey said.
This was the rifle team’s first match since beating the Air Force Nov. 11 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The team’s first practice was back on Jan. 22.
Nevada improved to 10-1, with its only loss coming in October to Jacksonville State University, in Jacksonville, Ala.
“Andrew Hickey and Sarah Smith shot well,” Harvey said.
Nevada beat UTEP 2259-2240 in the small bore event. Senior Andrew Hickey came in first, shooting a 570 in the small bore. Senior Lee Lemenager and Junior Sarah Smith both shot a 565 in the small bore.
Nevada beat UTEP 2331-2317 in the air rifle event. Freshman Jessica Klatt was calm and composed in the air rifle, where she led both teams with a 588, while UTEP freshman Amber Criss shot a 584, coming in second. Nevada junior Sarah Smith shot a 583 for third in the air rifle.
“It is clear we have a lot of work to do,” Harvey said.
Nevada shot 22 points below its average of 4612. The team has a lot of work both standing and kneeling but the prone shooting is good, Harvey said.
UTEP shot both of their events before Nevada because of flight delays in Las Vegas which caused problems for the UTEP team, Harvey said. UTEP started around 8 a.m. and the Nevada rifle team finished at 8 p.m.
Nevada will go to the NCAA qualifiers on Feb. 16-17 in Forth Worth, Texas, where they will try and qualify for the championships in March. There will be 45 universities trying to qualify for one of the eight spots to go to the National Championships in West Point, NY.
Nevada needs to focus on getting ready for the qualifier, and it has plenty of time and they know what they need to focus on. He believes that the team can improve to the levels where it needs to be in the next two weeks.
The team is unofficially ranked fourth in the nation, Harvey said.
