Nevada forward Marcelus Kemp scored 28 points in 21 minutes and moved to No. 4 on the Wolf Pack’s all-time scoring list in a 79-67 win against Fresno State Thursday at Lawlor Events Center.
His off-balanced fade-away jumper off the glass gave the Wolf Pack a 70-58 lead with 4:52 left in the game, and 1,667 points for his career.
“It feels good to be in the record book,” Kemp said in a statement. “It’s a great accomplishment for me, but I’m more excited about the win and the championships we’ve been able to get.”
Nevada’s Brandon Fields added 17 points and JaVale McGee had 15.
Kemp played just 22 minutes and didn’t address the media after the game due to an upset stomach.
Kemp made 10-of-17 shots in the game and three-of-four 3-pointers.
The senior was able to get his points quickly from the behind the 3-point line due to aggressive attacking and good passing by his teammates.
Lyndale Burleson drove to his left bringing in three Fresno State defenders and swung the ball out to the opposite side of the court to an open Kemp, who nailed the 3-pointer.
Freshman Armon Johnson did the same thing driving left, but while he was in air to attempt a shot, he threw a bounce pass to Kemp, who hit the three from a similar spot.
“We’ve matured as an offensive group,” Nevada coach Mark Fox said. “We’re playing more intelligently at that end (of the court). We’re playing together.”
Nevada shot 51 percent from the floor (27-65) and 46 percent from the 3-point line (13-28).
Kevin Bell led Fresno State with 22 points, Eddie Miller had 17 and Brandon Webster had 11.
Hector Hernandez had nine rebounds and five points.
He and Nevada forward Matt LaGrone got into a yelling match midway into the second half, before LaGrone shoved him.
The two were separated and LaGrone was given a double technical and ejected. Hernandez was given one technical.
Fox walked LaGrone down the entryway into the locker room and said he told LaGrone that he liked his toughness but he needed to be smarter.
The Wolf Pack takes on Utah State and the Dee Glen Spectrum Saturday at 6 p.m. pacific time.
