Sen. Justin Shane, Associated Students of the University of Nevada presidential candidate, said he has already started working to improve campus safety, decrease textbook prices, establish mid-term report cards, give more students access to sporting tickets and better seating at games.
“I have already taken necessary steps and established the resources to accomplish the goals I’ve set,” said Shane, a 20-year-old business administration major. “If I do take office, I can just hit the ground running.”
Shane said he has discussed his ideas in senate committees over the past year and a half that he has been a College of Business Administration senator and recently spoke with university officials about establishing his platform.
He said he plans to implement some of his ideas by creating neighborhood watch programs near campus, encouraging professors to order textbooks on time and changing the ticket distribution policy.
The leadership skills he has developed as academics committee chairman, vice president of Delta Sigma Pi and founder of the business student council will help him serve students as ASUN president, Shane said.
“I want to expand that to president and be an advocate for the university,” he said.

Eli Reilly said he is running to be president of the Associated Students of the University of Nevada because he wants to see a change on campus.
“We need a president who will step up and do something,” Reilly said.
Reilly said he wants to improve campus safety, enhance students’ college experience and make the university a “24-hour campus.”
He said the university needs to implement programs that have already been started. Reilly said the emergency call boxes need to be a priority. Reilly said he also wants to bring back the Safe Ride program, a program that gave free cab rides to people who were intoxicated.
Reilly said the he wants to make the college experience better for students by increasing campus events.
“With a little more money, Flipside can really do amazing things,” Reilly said.
Reilly said more buildings on campus need to be open later, especially the Joe Crowley Student Union and Lombardi Recreation Center.
Reilly’s running mate, Jeremiah Todd, was censured by the ASUN Senate last week. Reilly said Todd’s censure will not impact the campaign or the election.
“I stand by Jeremiah Todd fully,” Reilly said. “The reasons behind it are trivial. It will not affect our race.”

Adam Hunt said he feels the most important quality the president of the Associated Students of the University of Nevada, Reno can have is to listen to students.
“I just felt that everything that happens in ASUN happens on the top floors of the building and I want to bring student government back to the campus,” Hunt, a 22-year-old journalism major said.
Hunt said his goal is to make ASUN more productive and get students more involved in the campus.
Hunt’s platform is making the campus safer and spending student fees effectively. He said he plans to promote Campus Escort and work with local cab companies to provide safe rides home for intoxicated students.
Hunt said he wants to increase funding for student clubs and organizations and start a Web site similar to craigslist.org that provides a way for students to buy and sell textbooks.
Hunt has no previous ASUN experience.
“I’m not a politician, I just want us to have a really good campus atmosphere next year,” Hunt said.

Carmen Gilbert

Carmen Gilbert’s friends have told her she should run for president of the university since her freshman year.
“I’d brush it off and say, ‘Oh, it’s not for me,’” Gilbert said. “Then I sat down and thought about it and realized it was a position I wanted because I want to serve students.”
Gilbert, a 20-year-old political science and international affairs major, is a senator for the College of Liberal Arts and was the vice president for the Residence Hall Association for 2007- 2008.
Gilbert said her platform consists of three goals – to make students feel more connected and comfortable on campus, to make the Associated Students of Nevada, Reno respond to student needs and wants and to make sure ASUN serves as a student voice to the university, the Nevada System of Higher Education and the Nevada state legislature.
Gilbert said she plans to implement her platform by working with President Milton Glick on safety measures, expanding student clubs and raising student involvement.
“Students have a very powerful voice, but they don’t always utilize it the best they can,” Gilbert said.
