Five Women’s WAC Observations

Five Observations

1. This Western Athletic Conference Tournament will tell a lot about the Nevada women’s basketball team.

When Mikail Price erupted into a solid guard at the end of last season, the Wolf Pack had three of the better guards in the conference with Brandi Fitzgerald and Dellena Criner. The missing piece was solid interior players.

That will be the difference.

Cherlanda Franklin, Marianne Lombardi and Sabrina Keys are good players in the post, but they have the burden this week. If they can defend, rebound and add timely scoring, the Wolf Pack can go to its first NCAA Tournament.

2. Three of the four top seeds this year have at least one good guard.

Boise State has Tasha Harris, Fresno State has Tierre Wilson and Nevada has Criner. All are first-team All-WAC.

New Mexico State, the No. 3 seed, has second-team All-WAC guard Madison Spence. Spence will be tested this week as the freshman hasn’t played in an environment like the WAC Tournament.

3. Can Louisiana Tech get back to the NCAA Tournament
?

The Lady Techsters went to 25 straight until that streak broke last year when they lost in the first round of the WAC Tournament.

Even though they are athletic, the Lady Techsters lost 14 games this year. That’s a lot of games.

4. The Pan Am Center has seen some magic moments already this season. The second round should see some close games and the likelihood of game-ending heroics increases.

Fresno State’s Hayley Muncro hit a 75-foot shot at the buzzer to win at New Mexico State 85-84 in overtime on March 1. The play was ranked No. 8 on the SportsCenter Top-10 the Monday after.
5. Fresno State hopes its tough non-conference season will pay off this week. The Bulldogs played 13 games against teams that went to the NCAA Tournament or National Invitational Tournament last season.

Fresno State lost its first six games before going on a nine-game win streak midway through the season. It also won its last three games heading into this week.
