LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Nevada women’s basketball team was down seven when guard Dellena Criner picked up her second foul and sat the remaining five minutes of the half on the bench.
When Criner and her teammates trotted off the floor at halftime, Nevada was down 17.
The Wolf Pack couldn’t overcome the first half deficit and lost to Louisiana Tech, 82-56 in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday at the Pan American Center.
Criner led the Wolf Pack (18-12) with 14 points and four 3-pointers while Brandi Fitzgerald scored 11 and was the only other Nevada player to score in double figures.
“I’m sorry we couldn’t give you guys a better game,” Gervasoni told the media after the game. “I know our kids were ready to play and wanted it, but they just didn’t play very well.”
Louisiana Tech’s Jo Sneed and Shanavia Dowdell took the game over in the paint scoring 30 points and 19 rebounds combined. The Lady Techsters scored 42 points in the paint compared to Nevada’s 16.
“We had an advantage and that’s something we were obviously aware of,” Louisiana Tech coach Chris Long said. “We knew we had to get to the post. Shanavia had 17 points. Jo Sneed had 14. That’s a tough combination.”
Louisiana Tech went on a 26-9 run in the final 12 minutes of the game and shot 55 percent from the floor. The Lady Techsters held a 45-34 rebounding advantage had five blocks.
The Wolf Pack played the first 10 minutes of the game tough, forcing turnovers and playing good defense like it usually does.
But after tying the game at 19, Louisiana Tech went on a 23-6 run to end the half.
The Wolf Pack lost its last five games to end the season.
Gervasoni said her team will not likely go to its seconds Women’s National Invitational Tournament.
