Glick fires, bans Hussein from UNR
University President Milton Glick fired professor Hussein S. Hussein on Friday, going against the recommendation of three of the four people on Hussein’s hearing committee and its judge.
Hussein, who has sued dozens of administrators, including Glick, said police escorted him off campus, locking him and his graduate student out of his lab in the Fleischmann Agriculture Building. Glick also prohibited Hussein from coming to campus without an administrative escort.
“I have been treated in the most humiliating way you can treat a human being,”Hussein said.
Hussein said “we have to”appeal the decision.
Laurie Bollinger, Hussein’s sole graduate student, will need a new Ph.D. adviser. She has worked with Hussein for six years and plans to graduate in December. Glick wrote that Marsha Read, associate vice president of the graduate school, will take charge of Bollinger’s program.
Hearing officer Peter Breen, a former Washoe County judge, ruled before spring break that Hussein should be cleared of plagiarism charges but should face a reprimand for mislabeling more than $900,000 in donations as gifts instead of research grants. The University of Nevada, Reno can take a portion of grants to cover indirect costs such as facilities and administration.
But in a three-page letter, Glick agreed with the committee’s finding that Hussein plagiarized from his graduate students by sending excerpts from their master’s theses to donating corporations. Hussein said it was for oversight and the student names appeared on the published theses.
Glick would not comment for this story because it involves a personnel decision.
The committee, composed of four faculty members, wrote that Hussein showed “incompetence or inefficiency”in his duties, citing Nevada System of Higher Education code.
One committee member said Hussein should be fired. Two said he should be demoted and lose tenure. One said he should be reprimanded.
Glick, who held the final decision, fired Hussein.
“Your acts in these areas demonstrate serious misconduct over many years,”Glick wrote.
Hussein said this is the latest in the “schemes to destroy”him. He has 11 lawsuits against university and NSHE officials. His allegations range from embezzlement to harassment to retribution.
Hussein said the fight started in 2005 when he reported animal care violations at a UNR research farm. The U.S. Department of Agriculture fined UNR $11,400 for 46 violations that year.
“(My fight against the university) is not going to go away,”Hussein said. “They think this is going to put me on my knees and get me to drop my lawsuits and that’s not going to happen.â€
Hussein faced termination immediately after the USDA investigation. The 2005 charges were that Hussein damaged university property. He hired a veterinarian to take blood and fecal samples from pigs that were foaming from the mouth.
Those charges were later dropped.

You’re the biggest idiot and crook I’ve ever seen. I hope this former professor not only sues and wins, gets his job back, but I also hope that he DESTROYS you and your career….forever and ever!!! You are the most unprofessional so called “university president” that I have ever seen or heard of before except maybe for the Duke President! You are tied for first with the current Duke University President and his handling of the Duke Men’s Lacrosse Team. You are such a jerk!!! Go back to ASU and grow old there not here; you’ve worn out your welcome. Hussein: I hope you never give up because you WILL WIN, these university officials are corrupt, you know it and they know it! I don’t know who was worse: Lilly or Glick? They are both an embarrassment to this entire community and university. I for one, will NEVER give another red cent to that place of so called “higher education” until Glick and all the other corrupt administrators are gone. That will never be too soon. Keep going my friend because you are right and you will win. Glick banned you from campus too just like the former soccer coach….hummm, I thought that was OUR taxpaying university and NOT his university???!!! I will watch this one play out and not rest until they are ALL gone and THEY know who THEY are!!!
Take care and keep on fighting like you’ve never fought before. This community is behind you!

Susans: thank you for the best comment ever! The only point requiring some discussion is your last, “this community is behind you!” Hussein, a brave and honest man, has fought many battles for this faculty and for academic freedom. In return, he has been placed under illegal surveillance and defamed as an animal and student abuser, a liar, an embezzler, and a plagiarizer (this is the standard UNR tactic, defense by defamation), and now has been terminated by the president he is suing. Don’t be misled: the charges against him were, and are, patently false. But where is the outspoken faculty/staff support for his fight and where is the opposition to the administration? Unfortunately, while secretly whispering their support of Hussein, nearly all faculty/staff seem to fear speaking out on his behalf. They are afraid of receiving the Hussein treatment. Even the Nevada Faculty Alliance has shown once again how irrelevant it is, by doing nothing. If there was ever a time that the faculty and the NFA needed to take a stand, it is now, with the public sacrifice of Hussein, an honest man, before them. An opportunity to speak out will occur on May 10. Stay tuned.

(a) Susan, take a chill pill, the man wants to keep his university looking pristine.. he only did the human thing, which is act cowardly and fire someone who blew a whistle on inhumane treatment that some people did that will only make Nevadans look WAY more hick-like than they are.
(b) is it really a big surprise to anyone that UNR would do this?
and finally, (c) great article. i’m glad people are reacting to this.

I have to stand up for the opinion that Hussein is in the wrong, not Glick. I see no problem with what Glick has done, but only with what Hussein has done. Hussein mishandled almost a million dollars, and the consequence of that mistake (and others) is his dismissal from the university. Hussein may have been correct in his whistle-blowing, but that does not correct the wrong he has committed. Hussein should understand that pointing his finger (or lawsuits) at others does not remove the blame for his own misconduct. Hussein needs to accept the consequences of his actions. With great power comes great responsibility. Glick followed the recommendation of the hearing committee and made a decision that he is authorized to make. If lenience had been shown to Hussein, it could have softened the standard and made it easier for others to get away with inappropriate decisions.
Also, if Hussein feels that his “humiliation” has been supreme, he should study history and see how he has experienced nothing in comparison with countless people over the ages.

Glick did not follow the recommendation of the committee. That is the problem here. 4 out of 5 (including the judge) did not recommend termination. Glick did not even attend the hearing to listen to the facts. Do not judge what you do not know.

Secretly whispering their support? Fear of speaking out in favor of him? He sued each single one of them. What are you thinking? Rich Schweickert, you are an idiot and have no clue what you are talking about!

You must be one of Glicks paid administrators who is paying you big money to defend the university. Your the idiot for joining Glicks administration and you will have nowhere to go when your protectors fall like dominos. I sure you know the truth about Dr. Hussein but your check makes you believe otherwise. I’m sure if it wasen’t for the washed out cancer Lily, you’d have no job due to crappy credentials.

“Fall like dominos”? The only one falling like a domino is Dr Hussein. Or am I missing something?

Alot, Your buddy Glick and his lady Vreeland don’t seem to have enough proof to cover their tracks in all the retaliation schemes they’ve run throughout campas. Come on down to the physics department and see what problems UNR has been neglecting.
