Former soccer coach sues Glick, others for damages

Former Nevada soccer coach Terri Patraw has filed a lawsuit against University of Nevada, Reno officials in relation to her termination last fall.Patraw is suing for witness tampering and harassment by Executive Athletic Director Cindy Fox and defamation and harassment by UNR President Milton Glick.

Patraw is suing both Fox and Director of Athletics Cary Groth for gender discrimination and filling a coaching position pending a whistle-blower hearing.

Patraw is suing for sums exceeding $10,000 and attorney costs.

Court documents show that Patraw is suing because of “past and future general damages including emotional distress, mental anguish, humiliation, harm to reputation, grief, loss of enjoyment of life, as well as past and future damages including wage loss, loss of benefits.”

The case against Glick stems from his order to keep Patraw off the UNR campus to prevent altercation. The order was picked up by most television and newspaper outlets in Reno, and Patraw said it was defamatory.

The documents say that Glick violated the 14th Amendment by hiring soccer coach Jaime Frias while Patraw was trying to get her job back. Groth and Fox were involved in the decision to hire so they factor into the claim.

The lawsuit says that UNR discriminated Patraw because it hired a male coach who makes more money this season than Patraw did before she was fired.

A hearing officer gave permission to Nevada to hire a new coach because the trial could have been going on into the soccer season.

Patraw said she was fired Aug. 28 in retaliation for reporting NCAA violations. She filed a whistle-blower complaint for her job back, which was ruled against her two months ago.

She’s appealing the decision.

Patraw, who led the team to its first NCAA Tournament performance and received the highest grade on her evaluation, reported NCAA violations by the Nevada men’s and women’s golf teams.

The NCAA went to Patraw’s house to discuss the allegations, which also included players from the Nevada men’s basketball team.
