Nevada sweeps double-header with Bulldogs

Nevada moved closer to first place in the Western Athletic Conference standings Saturday by sweeping a double header against Fresno State.

The Wolf Pack won game one 4-1 and game two 7-3, ending WAC first place Fresno State’s 10-game WAC win streak.

“(Fresno State) is on fire,” Nevada coach Gary Powers said. “It’s huge for us to do what we did today because of how well they are playing. It also keeps us in the thick of things (in the WAC standings).”

Nevada starting pitcher Kyle Howe threw a complete game in the opener. Howe allowed seven hits and an earned run, while striking out five and walking four.

Howe’s only earned run came in the seventh inning to tie the game at 1-1, but the Wolf Pack responded in the eighth with a three-run home run by catcher Tyson Jaquez.

Jaquez’s home run was a lined shot over the head of Fresno State center fielder Gavin Hedstrom.

“It might be the number one thrill of my baseball career,” Jaquez said. “Fresno is our rival. We needed a big win today.”

Nevada trailed the majority of the second game, but struck for three runs in the seventh inning. The comeback was capped when Fresno State closer Brandon Burke intentionally walked Shaun Kort to load the bases for Mike Hale, who hit a two-run single to take the lead 5-3.

Nevada scored two more in the eighth.

Sammy Miller led Nevada on the mound in game two. He replaced starter Brock Stassi in the third inning, who had allowed three runs on six hits. Miller shutout Fresno State the rest of the way, throwing 6.1 innings and allowing only one hit.

“Miller did a good job to stabilize the game for us,” Powers said. “He gave us a chance to win the game.”

Nevada moves into second place with the two wins and three games behind Fresno State. The Wolf Pack is up 2-1 in the home series with the Bulldogs and will look to take the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Peccole Park.
