Hip-hop heavy-weights strike gold with new album

Slug and Ant have apparently appeased the gods, for their newest album, “When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold,” was definitely forged with the Midas Touch.

Over the past five years, Atmosphere has accumulated a cult following while slowly making the transfer from underground to mainstream. Along with a change in fan base, the duo has altered their sound. Originally labeled as a cross between emo and rap, Atmosphere became known for self-indulgent lyrics and simple beats. However, since “Seven’s Travels” the group has become less introverted while remaining socially conscious.

“When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold” is a perfectly accurate representation of the transfer from underground to mainstream. With a controlled voice and meaningful lyrics, Slug delivers touching stories through the art of rhyme. Articulating various struggles, Slug takes on the role of a hip-hop storyteller, becoming a modern-day Slick Rick of sorts.

Along with deep tales of everyday problems, Atmosphere also provides amazing production. Ant, the man behind the scenes, puts together a beautifully mastered set of tracks to accompany Slug’s artistry. Making good use of old equipment, much of the production on this album resembles movie soundtracks from the ‘70s and ‘80s with classic synths and funky organs.

Much slower than previous albums, the overall vibe of this record emanates the group’s new, calm style. With complete control, Atmosphere demonstrates that even though they are really just now becoming a force in the mainstream, their underground experience has made these hip-hop heavyweights battle-worn veterans.

With 15 solid tracks, this album lives up to its title. Rather than letting shit turn sour with the group’s sixth studio album, Atmosphere took their chance to make a 24-karat masterpiece.
