The smell of burritos and pizza filled the air as Alldaydrive, a local Reno band, blasted rock music across the quad. Music, games, handouts and, of course, free food were all part of the Friday Festival Aug. 22.
A lighthearted end to student orientation, the festival invited local restaurants to offer samples to students and parents. Nicknamed “The Taste of Reno,” the event allowed local vendors to give participants an opportunity to tour Reno without leaving the comfort of campus.
“It’s a cooperative effort between the Office of Perspective Students and Flipside,” Casey Stiteler, Flipside concerts chair, said. “(The Office of Prospective Students) brings the vendors, and (Flipside) brings the entertainment.”
The event featured an inflatable slide, boxing and jousting rings, a dunk tank and two live bands. Alldaydrive, who performed first, was a fast paced punk band. The second act, Charlie Chang, had a mellow Hawaiian-style pop feel.
To pull it all off, more than 100 student volunteers, made up mostly of Student Orientation Staff, spent months booking vendors, a weekend training and over four hours helped to set up the festival on Friday.
Their efforts attracted long lines of students and their parents to the 17 booths, making it successful, Arthur Pascual, a member of Student Orientation Staff, said.
“Friday Festival is one of my favorite events,” student body president Eli Reilly said. “Everyone’s getting free stuff, orientation’s over, it’s just a great atmosphere.”
