Greek Life recruits new members

Greek Life will start recruiting fraternity and sorority members this week.

Orientation for students interested in joining a sorority is from 6 to 9 p.m. Wedmesday in the Joe Crowley Student Union ballroom. Rush events will take place in the following weeks. There is a $30 fee for participating in recruitment, which is due at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Greek Life Office in the basement of Clark Administration Building.

The Multicultural Greek Council is hosting a meeting for those interested in joining a cultural fraternity or sorority at 7 p.m. Friday in The Joe Great Room on the fourth floor.

For students interested in joining a fraternity, contact the group and attend its recruitment events.

Welcome Week kicks off the school year

Flipside Productions is hosting Welcome Week through Friday. The schedule is:

Tuesday

  • Catch a free ride to class on a golf cart around campus from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Sandwiches in the Sun from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Joe Crowley Student Union Plaza.

Wednesday

  • Wolf It Down Pancake Breakfast from midnight to 2 a.m. on the quad.
  • Pack Pride Lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Joe Plaza. Donate old T-shirts and sweatshirts from high school and other universities. You must wear Wolf Pack gear to get food.
  • Intro to intramurals from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lombardi Recreation Center.

Thursday

  • Aloha Wolf Pack Breakfast from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at The Joe Plaza.
  • Luau on the Lawn from 7 to 9 p.m. on the quad.

Friday

  • Pool party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lombardi Recreation Center.
  • Pack Pride 101 to learn cheers and the fight song from 4 to 6 p.m. on the quad.

Town hall meeting to discuss challenges

Students are invited to attend a town hall meeting at 2 p.m. Sept. 4 in the Joe Crowley Student Union ballroom.

Faculty and students will discuss the challenges, including budget cuts, that the University of Nevada, Reno is facing in the upcoming year.

People unable to attend the meeting may listen and ask questions through text chat by logging into http://tinyurl.com/6jovl9 from any computer.

Credit union sponsors UNR scholarship

The Silver State Schools Credit Union on the first floor of the Joe Crowley Student Union is giving away 10 prizes of $2,000 each. Ten random drawings will take place through Oct. 31.

Students have to open a membership at the credit union to be eligible. It costs $100 to open an adult account and $50 for a young adult account. Official rules and requirements are available at the branch in The Joe.

RPD cracks down on underage drinking

The Reno City Council approved a $20,000 grant to support the Reno Police Department’s efforts to crack down on underage drinking.

Operations include third-party alcohol purchase intervention, driving under the influence prevention, monitoring alcohol sales to minors and checking false identifications.

Earlier this month, the Regional Street Enforcement Team conducted undercover alcohol sale compliance checks using underage decoys at 39 stores.

Citations for sales to a minor were given to: Lake-Mill Maxi Mart, Arch Food and Liquor and Reno Asian Market.
