Cartel, MC Lars and Yung Joc are travelling the country this summer with their first stop being none other than Reno. Sponsored by XBOX 360 and Crocs and hosted by Flipside, the concert is headlined by Cartel and MC Lars, with opening acts Tree Woodz, Who Cares and Royal Bliss. Also playing will be local favorite Days No Different. Blending rock and hip-hop, Flipside seems to have a thrown a perfect concert together for Welcome Week.
Cartel is best known for their “Band in a Bubble” fame where the band was constantly broadcast live for fans to watch. The band was challenged to write, record and produce an album while living in a dome. After 20 days, they broke out of the dome and performed live for fans. Nearly a year later, the band is up and touring again with interesting co-headliners MC Lars and Yung Joc.
While Cartel may be a bit out of their element performing with rappers, MC Lars has plenty of experience touring with rock bands. The self-proclaimed hero of the “iGeneration” has previously toured with bands such as The Matches, Say Anything, Jack’s Mannequin, Bayside and The Aquabats. In fact, what is more surprising is that he is touring with another rapper, Yung Joc. The nerdcore rap star is most well-known as a critic of pop culture corporations, as advertised in songs like “Download This Song,” “Signing Emo” and “Hot Topic Is Not Punk Rock.” His new album, The Gigantic Robot Kills, is expected to come out later this year.
Along with these two stars are lesser-known acts Tree Woodz, Who Cares and Royal Bliss. Tree Woodz is a rapper with soul from Illinois. He comes to Reno with an eclectic style, blending multiple forms of music with his smooth flow. Who Cares is a West Coast rap group, flowing by way of Sacramento, Calif. With a jazzy undertone and socially-conscious lyrics, Who Cares stays true to the underground rap scene.
Royal Bliss is your run-of-the-mill indie, alt rock band, aside from the fact that their experiences include drug addictions, deadly car crashes, multiple law suits and just plain drama. And they are from Utah.
Welcome Week vets Days No Different will be playing the show as well, giving freshman a taste of the kind of music culture Reno has to offer. With something for everyone, the variety of this Flipside production is sure to please all.
Chicago

Classic rock nostalgia always finds its way to Reno, so it makes perfect sense that Chicago would stop by before they move on to a 12-show stint in Las Vegas.
