Budget crisis cuts will not interfere with promising new school year

Fellow Students,

I wanted to write to you all today and officially welcome you back to campus. I hope everyone had a great summer and are anxious to get back into the swing of things.

With fall comes the excitement of everyone being back on campus and the rejuvenation of our collective spirit. After a long summer of jobs, internships, overbearing parents and summer school, it is time for us all to look forward to the opportunities that come with the onset of a new academic year.

This summer has been an eventful one for the Associated Students of the University of Nevada. I’m sure some of you have heard about the budget crisis that plagues Nevada. If you haven’t, our state is facing a potential budget shortfall of around 14 percent beginning in fall 2009.

The impacts of a cut of this magnitude will have tremendous consequences for our university, and will significantly alter the trajectory of our campus and the services it offers.

I want to make it clear that your elected and appointed officers in ASUN have spent the summer doing our utmost to look out for student interests both to University administrators as well as state officials.

I am planning a series of town hall meetings that will start in the coming weeks to educate students about the origins and ramifications of these cuts.

This issue has been placed at the forefront of my concerns as president as it represents the single most important issue that has faced the university in decades.

Rest assured that I am doing my best to work with the state and university officials to fight and lessen the impact of these cuts.

Other than dealing with the budget cuts, ASUN has also spent the summer working on a variety of issues and projects.

As president, I have begun an initiative to lobby the university to allow for a bar and grill restaurant to be placed in the vacant space in the third floor of the Joe Crowley Student Union.

I am also working to expand the Campus Info Monitor Project to more buildings around campus.

I am also happy to say we have funded clubs and programming more than ever before in the history of our university.

If you are feeling like you have missed out on some aspects of the college experience, now is your time to dive headfirst into the sea of opportunities that our university has to offer.

Take this time to try new things.

Get involved. Join a club. Start a club. Play in intramurals. Be a part of ASUN. Go to all of the athletic events. Meet new people and try something new everyday.

Don’t simply come to campus, go to class and leave because you will miss out on a lot of college.

Your time here is short and if there is any advice I can impart to anyone it is this: Don’t lead an ordinary college experience!

This time is too precious to miss any of these opportunities.

Live the experience. Love the university. Root for the Pack.
