McLaughlin forgoes freshman year

Mark McLaughlin, the Wolf Pack’s most anticipated recruit this off-season, decided Friday to enroll in prep school for the 2008-09 school year instead of coming to Nevada.

McLaughlin will not attend college because he has not been certified or denied by the NCAA Eligibility Center.
“He’s frustrated,” coach Mark Fox said. “It’s not an ideal situation.”

McLaughlin averaged 21.3 points per game his senior year of high school, while averaging 23 points his junior year.

McLaughlin sat out the majority of his senior year in order to raise his grades and become eligible to attend college, but because he has not heard from the NCAA he has decided to not attend classes at Nevada this season.

The four-star recruit was ranked 16 by scout.com as one of the best guard prospects in the country.

“We just couldn’t risk him coming here and not being eligible,” Fox said.

Fox also said Nevada should be able to handle the loss of its star recruit because last year’s backcourt, consisting of Armon Johnson and Brandon Fields, will be returning for the Wolf Pack next season.
