Would you like some communication with your journalism?

After 115 years of “serving the University of Nevada, Reno,” we’re finally asking: how do we serve you?

With the continuing popularity of online news and social networking and in an effort to do meaningful journalism, The Nevada Sagebrush is devoted to communicating with you on a regular basis.

We’re only about 25 students in a sea of more than 16,000 — you clearly know what interests you better than us. Now you can help decide what we cover and how we cover it.

Our first step toward better communication is the installation of a new, immersive forum on nevadasagebrush.com. Here, anyone can build a small profile and start a topic about anything: life, sex, movies, hair, booze, etc.

But more importantly it’s a place to participate in conversations, meet like-minded people and enhance your understanding of other perspectives.

We’ve set up a few categories to prompt topics but don’t hesitate to ignore them and create your own. You can also suggest better categories or give us general feedback and letters to the editor.

These forums will be actively moderated by me, the public editor. I will try my best to stay out of most discussions except where it’s clear that more objective information will enhance a conversation or where vile Internet trolls alienate or libel other members of the community.

Other staff members will be contributing similarly. We will do this through comments and may start discussion topics based on debatable issues to help people express ideas and perspectives on a better platform. The forums are a place to really dig deeper into news that matters.

Next, we will continue to develop our Web site into a more social application allowing you to post your own information or calendar events that will mix seamlessly with our content. These features are coming down the road as our staff learns to build these features into the site. If you have any suggestions or expertise for more features, please e-mail us.

Outside of the Web, we want to improve our connection with the university community by covering the campus with its needs in mind. We want to write from your perspective. We want to hold forums, panels and debates so you can participate and make this campus a better place. Our first project will be the budget crisis.

Finally, we’ve put e-mail addresses with every story so you can hold us accountable. If you like or dislike something or want more information, let us know. If you have a story to tell, post it online, call or e-mail us. Otherwise, we’ll work doubly hard to come find you.

We hope you like what we’ve got planned because we’re excited to be the best journalists you’ve ever met. If you don’t, e-mail me at mikeman@nevadasagebrush.com and we’ll talk about it.
