Graduate Student Association President Brithany Thomson wants to relieve some of the hassle that graduate students face while serving her term this year.

She said she hopes to expand childcare services on campus and continue working toward adding on-campus graduate student housing.
The childcare facilities on campus don’t accommodate the demand, spawning hefty waiting lists, she said.
“You almost need to get on [the waiting list] before you have a child,” said Thomson, a 24-year-old sociology graduate student.
Thomson is in the process of deciding what revamping is necessary for childcare facilities.
Aside from her pursuit of improved childcare, Thomson will continue her predecessor’s, Rebecca Bevans, work toward implementing on-campus graduate student housing. Sites on the north end of campus are being surveyed for this purpose.
These inaugural endeavors are examples of how far Thomson’s quest to get involved has taken her since serving as a GSA council member last year.
“I joined to get involved (because) I didn’t as an undergrad,” Thomson said. “I learned about the inner workings (of the GSA) while I served on the council, and by the time the election came along, I felt I knew enough to fill the position.”
In the little time Thomson has been in office, Greg Nuttle, graduate student services director and GSA advisor, said he has already witnessed her aptitude for the job.
“She has already demonstrated a strong grasp of the issues and challenges impacting the graduate student environment,” Nuttle said.
Thomson, a Reno native who chose University of Nevada, Reno for her undergraduate and graduate studies to be close to her family and the mountains, plans to also spend time with her family and her thesis on the subculture of snowboarding.
While Thomson has a lot to juggle, fellow sociology graduate student Katie Mauldin said she knows no one more qualified to be the GSA president.
“She [is] one of the most hard-working people I have ever met,” Mauldin said. “Brit is an excellent role model for not only the new graduate students but for veteran grad students.”
