The countdown is on. You have 25 days before the Wolf Pack takes on the School Down South on Sept. 27 at Sam Boyd Stadium. At stake is the right to keep the Fremont Cannon for the fourth year in a row. But while jumping in a car on game day with your buddies may seem like the best deal, planning ahead could save you money and give you time to tailgate. Here are some travel and lodging options to consider.
This year, the Associated Students of the University of Nevada is offering a $75 package that includes a ticket to the game, a seat on the bus, a T-shirt and an overnight stay at a hotel. The bus will depart for UNLV at 8 a.m. Sept. 27 and leave at 11 a.m. Sept. 28. Applications to ride on the bus will be available Thursday at the ASUN accounting office on the third floor of the Joe Crowley Student Union. For more information, contact Flipside Special Events Chair Lauren Kohler at specialevents@asun.unr.edu.
Roundtrip flights to Las Vegas currently range from $138 to $244 through Southwest Airlines, much cheaper than flights through United, which comes out to about $400, and American, averaging more than $1,000. Take into account how long the flight is and how you will get from the McCarran International Airport to Sam Boyd Stadium, which is about eight miles away. While there is no direct shuttle from the airport to Sam Boyd, a cab ride from McCarran to Sam Boyd will cost you about $21
If you choose to make the eight-hour drive down, you can save money by riding with friends who can share the costs of gas. Prepare for about four fill-ups for a roundtrip drive. With gas averaging $3.70 per gallon, a person can expect to spend about $85 each way on the 460-miles between Reno and Las Vegas if his or her car gets 20 miles per gallon.
Because the game starts at 7:05 p.m., it likely won’t finish until 10 p.m., long after you would need to be at McCarran to take the last flight out and making the drive an all-night ordeal. If you need a place to stay, and don’t have friends or family, consider these hotels and motels: Motel 6 on Tropicana Avenue for $78 a night or the Emerald Suites on Las Vegas Boulevard for $70. Here are some other options: the Riviera for $94; Stratosphere for $80; Sahara for $87; the Orleans for $78; Palace Station for $80; and the Gold Coast for $40.
