The Wolf Pack started its season on a successful note Friday at the 2008 Nevada Twilight Cross Country Classic.
Facing a strong head wind for much of the race, Nevada was able to place five of its runners in the top seven overall giving the Wolf Pack its first victory of the season.
“(The wind) affects everyone,” Nevada coach Kirk Elias said. “They try to run behind other runners as to not let it affect them too much but the wind affects everyone.”
UC Riverside’s Danielle Evans finished first in the women’s collegiate 4K at 15:55, but Nevada’s Christa Avena was not far behind finishing in second place at 16:05. The Wolf Pack’s Alma Janet Martinez finished third at 16:15, followed by Nevada’s Chelsea Chauvet-Moore at 16:35.
“Finishing five of the top-seven in a competitive field, I’m very impressed.” Elias said.
Nevada came into this race fresh off last season where it finished in the top-ten at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships. Its top-ten finish last season was only the second time in team history and the first under Elias.
The Nevada Twilight Cross Country Classic is traditionally the one and only home meet for the team. Because of this, famous celebrities such as Alphie were on hand.
Nevada’s next test will come Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Sacramento State Hornet Jamboree. Nevada will be looking to repeat its performance from last year’s race where it won for the first time since the Sacramento State Hornet Jamboree in 2005.
