Cross Country: Avena takes WAC Athlete of the Week

The University announced Friday that it will honor the 40th anniversary of former star Marion Motley’s induction into the Professional Football Hall of Fame throughout the 2008 football season.

The Wolf Pack will pay tribute to Motley’s legacy at its Nov. 22 game against Boise State and will put together a series of features on him on its Web site to share his story and commemorate the legacy that Motley left on the Wolf Pack and professional football.

Motley, a fullback and linebacker for Nevada from 1940-42, broke pro football’s race barrier in 1946 along with Bill Willis, Kenny Washington and Woody Strode. In his eight seasons with the Cleveland Browns and single season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, both of the All-America Football Conference, Motley amassed 4,720 yards on just 828 carries. He retired as a holder of numerous Browns’ team records.

Motley was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1968 and was named to the NFL’s 75th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1994.
