Wolf Pack tennis plays the kids

The Nevada tennis team competed with children in the community Friday in the Red, White and Blue tennis Pro-Am sponsored by Lakeridge Tennis Club.

“The guys and the girls team love giving back to the community,” Nevada men’s tennis Coach Chad Stoloff said.

Children 8 years and older were given the chance to play and be instructed by Nevada tennis players for a $10 fee.

Junior Laurent Garcin, ranked No. 94 by the International Tennis Association ranked, was playing two kids at once at the event.

“I hope this makes them happy and gives them a good experience,” said Garcin, who also leads weeklong tennis instruction courses near his home in France. “Hopefully this can help get kids out to play tennis.”

Garcin will be Nevada’s lone representative at Baylor University Friday to Sunday for the Baylor Invitational. The top individual tennis players in the nation will be competing in the tournament.

“It’s going to be a tough tournament,” Garcin said. “I’m excited.”

Garcin not only won the No. 1 singles spot in the Western Athletic Conference Championships last season against New Mexico State’s Gustave Diep, but also set the single-season record for wins at Nevada with 27.

“I want to end the season in the top-50 in the country,” he said. “I think I can do that.”

The Wolf Pack’s first team tournament is Oct. 3 to Oct.5 at the Bulldog Classic, hosted by Fresno State.

“We have an older group now and have gotten a lot of experience in the last two years,” Stoloff said. “Hopefully they can take those experiences and believe in what they’re doing.”

As for Garcin, Stoloff said the sky is the limit.

“Last year was a true breakout year for him,” he said. “He’s got some high goals and standards and hopefully he can achieve them.”
