Defender’s first goal grabs Pack’s first win

The Wolf Pack soccer team ended its 11-game winless streak to start the season Friday when it beat Hawaii 1-0 in Nevada’s Western Athletic Conference opener.

The Wolf Pack (1-9-2) scored its only goal when Patrice Godwin kicked the winning score in the 67th minute. Hawaii moves to 4-5-3 and 0-1 in the WAC on the season.

Nevada coach Jaime Frias earned the first win of his career as a Wolf Pack head coach with Friday’s win. Nevada goalkeeper Marie Cove also registered her first shutout of the season.

“It feels freakin’ awesome,” Godwin said.

The Nevada defender kicked Nevada into first place in the WAC standings with the first goal of her career.

“Coach (Frias) has been keeping (the defenders) on the offensive,” she said. “When we attack other teams we are coming with a full team attack.”

Godwin, a senior, is one of the best defenders in Nevada history, but she rarely has chances on goal.

The shot on goal was the third of her career and her first of the season.

“It was an ugly game,” Frias said. “We’ll take it, though. It’s the first win of the season and it puts us in first place.”

Nevada battled Hawaii after a daytime snowstorm dropped a dusting in the Washoe Valley.

The game time temperature was 31 degrees.

“(Weather) definitely played a part,” Frias said.

Godwin’s goal was the only shot on goal of the game for the Wolf Pack.

Hawaii had 10 shots on goal.

Nevada will play its second WAC game of the season Sunday when the San Jose State Spartans come to Mackay Stadium.
