Former ATO members poke fun at hazing scandal

Eight months after the university suspended Alpha Tau Omega for hazing pledges, former ATO members rolled through Saturday’s homecoming parade in a chicken float. A sign,  “Hungry like the pledge,” hung across the truck’s side and a man in a chicken suit ran around the float.

Consequences for their actions could include lengthening the group’s two-year suspension, depending on the university’s findings in investigating the situation surrounding the float, university officials said.

The University of Nevada, Reno no longer recognizes ATO as an official organization after it found them guilty of feeding pledges raw chicken and branding recruits on the buttocks with dry ice. The suspended fraternity is eligible to reapply for status in fall 2010.

“We are certainly pulling together all the information we have,” said Jerry Marczynski, vice president of Student Life Services. “ATO is suspended for a (minimum) of two years and this may impact that length of time.”

Former ATO President Christian Reviglio did not return phone calls asking for comment.

Wynn Smiley, chief executive officer of ATO’s national organization, refused to comment in time for publication because he said he did not want to deal with the parade incident Monday evening.

Marczynski said the university is looking for details about whether the student government requested ATO to modify the float’s design and how the group was allowed to participate.

The Associated Students of the University of Nevada Homecoming Department was in charge of the parade and gave the group of former ATO members permission to participate.

Marczynski and Sally Morgan, director of the Student Conduct Office, said they think ASUN asked the group to remove the “Hungry like the pledge” sign, but are still investigating the details.

“My understanding is they removed (the sign) in the staging area, but it obviously was on the float in the parade,” Marczynski said.

ASUN Director of Homecoming Brita Muller said she did not ask the group to modify its float in any way.

Patrick Kealy, former scribe for the fraternity, said the float was parked in the staging area for about 40 minutes before the start of the parade and nobody asked him to change the design. He said he was unsure if others in the group were asked to remove the sign.

ASUN President Eli Reilly said community members and off-campus groups were encouraged to participate in the parade.

“It’s a community event, so it’s open to everyone,” Muller said. “It’s their own decision to make those calls (about the float’s design). It’s not up to me, it’s up to them.”

Reilly said no one knew the float would be so controversial and he thought it would be a generic float labeled ATO.

“I don’t understand why they had to poke fun at something very serious,” Reilly, a member Sigma Nu, said.

Kealy said he asked Muller if ATO could enter a float before the event and gave her a brief description of the float.  He said she advised him to be cautious. Muller said she did not receive a description of the float.

“It was a combination of an anti-haze campaign and it was partly a joke,” Kealy said. “Obviously, we knew it would be controversial and that people would take it different ways. We (were) hoping to appeal to those who have a little sense of humor.”

Responses to “Former ATO members poke fun at hazing scandal”
  1. Lindsey Says:

There was no harm in ATO entering a float of that nature. They have been punished for their actions and if they want to make fun of themselves , then they should be able to do so. Regardless of their suspension, they were a very prevalent Greek organization on campus and most-likely will continue to be.

  2. Tim Taycher Says:

The harm of ATO being in the parade is more than evident, they are perpetuating a culture of Hazing on campus. They have no respect for the punishment that they deserve. Whether or not they were making fun of themselves, providing a tongue-in-cheek admission of guilt, or basically telling the administration that they do not care about what happens to them it makes the entire Greek Community look bad. For too many years they have not been held accountable for their actions and I hope that this is the straw that breaks the camels back and they receive a harsher punishment for their lack of judgment and character.

  3. Parade Watcher Guy Says:

that guy in the chicken costume was yelling “Only you can lead the fight against hazing!” Classic.

ATO- that was hilarious. You are truly the house that i think everyone tries to hate, but just cant.

Tim. Lighten up, eh? You shouldn’t be too mad considering that YOUR float (piKapp) actually had chunk of raw meat on it! Did you ever think of the risks involved with your members handling and exposing raw meat?! I found that WAY more offensive than ATO’s float. That was complete insensitivity to vegetarians, vegans, and animal rights activists. You have no room to talk. Someone should file a complaint against you guys.

  4. kAT Says:

I agree with Lindsay, ATO is being punished for their actions.

““It was a combination of an anti-haze campaign and it was partly a joke,” Kealy said. “Obviously, we knew it would be controversial and that people would take it different ways. We (were) hoping to appeal to those who have a little sense of humor.”

ATO and the University has set an example of what can happen to any school through hazing. Seeing the float as a chicken, reminded some of us as to why they were suspended. Yes maybe it was suppose to be humorous to some but who is to say they wern’t trying to educate other Greek organizations as to what can happen. So they had a sense of humor, I think humor is healthy when anybody is hurting

There are always two sides to the story, lets wait and see what the boys have to say before we hang them.

  5. Mayo Thompson Says:

The parade from my understanding was open to the public which would not exclude ATO from participating but ASUN should have told ATO to change their float. I think it is funny but it was not appropriate due to the situation of ATO’s hazing charges. It basically shows, in public, that they do not take the suspension seriously.

  6. Lindsay Says:

Get over it! There is no crime being committed. ATO learned from their mistakes and are paying the consequences. The float is poking fun.. nothing more. It made you laugh! Just because it was poking fun doesn’t mean that they did not take what happened seriously. Does everyone REALLY think that there is no hazing going on in the other houses? Come on! Really? This is college, its going to happen no matter what. You can only hope that people are being responsible and not taking it too far.

And as for ATO “not being held accountable for the actions” for many years? Come on Buddy. Either your in a different fraternity or someone who flat out doesn’t like ATO. How many of the houses have been held accountable for all of their wrong doings over the years? I can name a few fraternities that got away with a lot more than that. Do I need to go into detail? I can if you want?

    Let it be!

  7. Dusty Handsome (Greek Member) Says:

I believe the member of the former ATO were well within their rights to make whatever float they wanted. The Greek houses on campus must follow the rules that an average students must follow, plus agreements with UNR, plus the rules in the individual house’s bylaws, plus follow the customs and norms associated with the Greek system. I think that ATO was making a bad situation humorous and celebrating their new found freedoms of no longer being constrained by 3 of the 4 previously mentioned layers of rules. On top of my justifications for permitting the actions of ATO, the proposed new rounds of sanctions are ridiculous. Former ATO members entered into the float contest as an independent team, not a Fraternity, which they are no longer recognized as. How is it just to punish the Former ATO with a longer suspension, when all of the former ATO didn’t partake in the act? Will we punish UNR if an alumni goes on a shooting spree? Or better yet, maybe we should punish the whole senate when one officer doesn’t do their job right, or is a habitual nuisance. Since when has free speech become taboo on a college campus, and if it has, is there not some thing wrong with revelation?

  8. Tim Taycher Says:

I am perfectly fine with free speech, but what I am not fine with is the dangerous culture of hazing that exists in the Greek System.

Parade Watcher - if you had a rational argument, besides that PiKapp might have upset vegans, I might take you seriously; but that sort of hyperbole does not work for me, I have heard that archetype of an excuse for years for so many situations.

kAT - by ATO not being recognized is education enough, the Greek Community does not need to see a float of a chicken with a banner that reads “Hungry Like the Pledge” to remember what had happened.

Mayo - yes, the Parade was open to the public, but the fact that an organization not recognized by the University was let into the Parade is a different story. You had to submit a packet with a description of your float and if ATO submitted a packet, I wonder whose call it was to allow an organization that has been suspended from university events. Again, if they would have entered a float from their Undergraduate Alumni Chapter that was civil, I would have applauded them for their effort to reform. And I hope if Phi Beta Sigma ever gets on this campus that they are pillars of anti-hazing and don’t brand like so many of their fellow chapters around the country.

Lindsay - I am not ignorant that other houses haze, but it is ATO that acted like children, but they should not be treated like children. If they wanted to enter the parade with a float that showed that they were gentlemen, I would have applauded that, but the fact that they chose to attach their letters to a situation that has cast the entire Greek Community in a negative light is abhorrent.

Dusty - as a Greek Member you should think in the big picture, the actions of one chapter has an effect of the perception of all chapters on our campus. If we, as Greeks, want to be taken seriously, we, as a community, need to grow up.

  9. Captain Hooper Says:

    To quote Tim:
“providing a tongue-in-cheek admission of guilt”

Tim, what do you think got us kicked off campus in the first place. An admission of guilt on our part is old news there buddy.

Plus, are you insane? you think we are perpetuating hazing? That float was a reminder of the consequences of hazing, you moron. did you not hear my brothers yelling stuff like “lead the fight against hazing!”?

Why would we advocate hazing? It was that which led to our demise as an organization.

I think you seriously misunderstood the float, and are taking action on pure emotion rather than thought.

  10. Parade watcher Guy Says:

“I am perfectly fine with free speech, but what I am not fine with is the dangerous culture of hazing that exists in the Greek System.”

Either you are in favor of free speech, or not. There are not ifs or buts. Thats what makes this country great. Its not like an ATO yelled Fire! in a crowded building.

“Greek Community does not need to see a float of a chicken with a banner that reads “Hungry Like the Pledge” to remember what had happened.”

Tim, you don’t get to decide what the greek system needs and what it doesn’t.

Tim, you heard it from Captain Hooper. Did you ever consider it might have been an ANTI hazing stunt?

I am very troubled that you feel my sentiments of offense toward the raw meat are “hyperbole”. So I have decided to file a complaint against you personally, and against PiKapp. I will adress it to Glick, the Regents, IFC, and any Vegetarian/Vegan/Animal Rights Organization on campus. You my friend, are a complete hypocrite.

  11. Jimbo Says:

First of all I have one thing to say.. Its really pathetic that the Univeristy has nothing better to do with their time than find fault in ATO or any other fraternity for that matter. And Secoond of all, the float was done out of pure humor and it was done to have a little fun during homecomming. This obviously shows that the Univeristy has no sense of humor whatsoever.

And Timmy boy, you need to get off your high horse pal, dont get mad at the members of ATO for just having a little bit of fun. They have been punished for their actions, and not being recognized by the univerisyt or their nationals is plenty of punishment. Extending their punishment would just be ridiculous. I feel bad for the guys, they havnt been able to participate in any university activitiesm, and when they finally are able to participate they get yelled at for having some humor. they were just trying to have some fun, GET OVER IT!!!!!

  12. Megan Says:

Marczynski said the university is looking for details about whether the student government requested ATO to modify the float’s design and how the group was allowed to participate.

Marczynski and Sally Morgan, director of the Student Conduct Office, said they think ASUN asked the group to remove the “Hungry like the pledge” sign, but are still investigating the details.

The real story here is whether it would be appropriate or legal for the University or ASUN to request or demand changes to the float.

  13. Kyle Says:

Hooper, to try and claim that your float was attempting to educate people on the consequences of hazing is insulting to anyone with a functioning brain. It was an attempt at humor, and like most attempts similar to this, it either offended or provided a cheap laugh. Don’t kid yourself into thinking you did anything other than that.

  14. Ross Says:

    Mr. Taycher,
I think it was not wise in using the comment, “For too many years they have not been held accountable for their actions.” You are using hear-say in your argument. Are you a member of Alpha Tau Omega? Are you alumni of Alpha Tau Omega? No, you are not so then tell me how you know how we are initiated now and in the past? I also believe you are a member of Pi Kappa Phi who was established on campus in like 2005, so then you do not even have old enough alumni to ask on this matter. Are we a bunch of irresponsible men who have no purpose? That is weird since we have been one of the most prosperous fraternity houses in the entire state on Nevada. We have produced governors, senators, sheriffs, mayors, district attorneys, district judges, CEO of American Gaming, the “Father of UNLV Athletics” is from our house, Collegiate boxers, coaches, football players, basketball players, baseball player…etc, deputy secretary of state, University of Nevada professors and deans of men, and many other business leaders. What alumni has your chapter produced? For you to say that you hope we are punished more is a slap in the face. We have already had one of the dearest things in the world to use taken away. What you think after what happened our alumni and me would allow anything like this to ever happen again? I believe not. The float in the parade was a mockery since we got shut down for feeding our pledges raw chicken which never happened. We kept our integrity with the administration and told them and our nationals the entire six days of hell week. Feeding our pledges chicken was the dumbest thing I ever heard. They never even did a formal investigation. It just got out in the media and so everyone believed it. We did use sleep deprivation, forced calisthenics, and branding. When had anyone died from getting a lack of sleep? If this was true then college students across the country would be dropping like flies. When has anyone died from working out? I think that is what health specialists tell you to do. Also, when you are a member of a sports team and you mess up what happens? They punish you like running lines or jogging the field. If this was hazing then my high school coach would have been long gone. The branding is something that was voluntary. Everyone got it because it was a huge tradition in our house. If we only branded pledges then why did our president have three and some members even had five. I think you should do some research and investigation before you make accusation again an individual or organization. AND We were yelling “Stop Hazing!” What did you not get from it? The only thing we did wrong was accidently using our letters. We were never told by the people in charge that we could not. If we were, we would have changed it. We understand what we have done and when we come back we will change it. None the current undergraduate alumni will be here in FALL 2010. We had Mikey and then getting shut down in like six months, GIVE US A BREAK.

  15. Mr. Smeeglemyer Says:

    1) Thanks to all of you that understand, in light, the trivial essence of the preceeding events and for having a humorous outlook on such a truly lighthearted situation. Your support is appreciated and is in form, what helps to keep us alive on this campus. Lindsey, Parade Watcher, kAT, Dusty, and Captain Hooper, my gratitude is certain and my faith in the charisma of our student body is unmatched for your support.

    2) What in God’s name kind of tight oversensitive asshole do you posses to shout that our float, representing one of the primary icons claiming responsibility for our abeyance, offends you? Are you joking me?! If anyone on this campus should even be relatively offended, it should be a member of ATO, for the float clearly mimics the primary accusation that ran us off this campus in the first place. If any hard feelings should be felt towards this float, it should be those whom are no longer receiving the privilege of campus recognition because of the events that led us to such a fate. Indubitably, the float clearly mocks our own decisions that were foolishly and slovenly rendered last fall. Get off your high fucking horse and stop dipping that nose into manners not concerning you personally. The float and our participation was in no regards or no intentions any kind of slap or transgression towards any other Greek institution. Period. So for anyone to go out of the way to cry and hold offense to what was seen, when they aren’t even a member of ATO or went through the events of that house, need to pull their noses out of everyone else’s business and tend to their own.

    3) In no way, shape, or form does this involvement in a campus tradition, wherein ATO has been involved for nearly longer than any other Greek house on campus, perpetuate, promote, or advocate any kind of hazing. Especially when one of our house members is parading around, shouting “lead the fight against hazing!” Um where in any kind of syntactical analysis or linguistic evaluation can you possibly derive that we are advocating hazing from that statement? An anagram at the most, but not nearly sufficient.

    4) “They have no respect for the punishment that they deserve.”

Legitimately, you have some irrational biased hatred towards our house. Seeming as ATO has never intentionally or purposely done anything to offend PiKapp, this dislike’s origin is unbeknown to me. Yet, clearly your knowledge of respect for our punishment is nothing more than ignorant. We fully accepted our punishment and yet still continue to participate and volunteer in aid around the community. Evidently, giving up our house, doing community service with the local institutions around Reno, helping other Greek houses with their homecoming involvement, and still being involved with our alumni is clearly not caring what happens to us and is totally disrespectful to our punishment. HA get real man. That is clearly how children accept their punishment, well. . . Davidson Academy at the least.

    5) In no way did our participation in the parade violate any ramification that is being held against us, neither by the University or Nationally. The homecoming parade is a public parade, any group of people on campus can participate, with prior authorization first. We received that go ahead and followed all the same procedures as anyone else. Essentially, a group of random people can get together and create a “wolf pack” float, recognition as a campus organization is not necessary and was never implemented against us. If you want to rave about it, cry to ASUN, not the rest of the fellow students on campus.

    6) Finally, I applaud you for your concern for this university and this Greek system, for I share the same love for this campus as you. But seriously, the moronic and obnoxious complaining about what happened is sophomoric and ludicrous. It sounds like a rejected high school prom date crying about her rival having better hair. Get over it. Worry about your own house. We aren’t even formally part of the Greek system or the campus, so why are you so worried about us disgracing them. Do we impact you that much? As parade watcher said, you everyone obviously tried to hate us so much, but can’t.

L&R to those who support school spirit and involvement and a bit of a laugh.

  16. Jimbo Says:

I just want to say that when the members of ATO were kicked off campus, our status changed to undergraduate alumni. therefore, the University has no right to force these aligations against the ALUMNI members of ATO. And also, Mr. Taycher, Our ATO ALumni chapter is one of the most predominent groups of men in the Reno area. Like ross said we have senators, athletes, and successful businessmen, and much more. The ATO chapter is and always will be a predominent group of men in the Grea’ter Nevada. The alligations against our Fraternal Chapter are completeley ridiculous.

And just for all of those people who did not attend the parade, the float was by far the best looking float there, it should have gotten the best use of poultry adward.

You never know, the wolf might have been hungry for chicken instead of cow, did ever think of asking him?

  17. Lindsey Says:

    Dear Taycher,

In all serious my friend, what crawled up your a** and died?

    xoxoxo

  18. Alan Says:

All I applaud the other members of this forum. When I heard that the ATOs might be suspended longer due to a float, I laughed at the administration. I can’t imagine punishing a group after they got permission to participate in the Homecoming Parade. I think that this should just go away. I think it could easily be handled with the former leaders of that organization. The administration should be more proactive with the student body. They should sit down and tell the former ATOs that they can not use their letters or participate in any school function at all. It sounds to me they pretty much want them to transfer schools. I honestly believe that if they knew entered their float would mean losing their charter for longer that they would have never thought of it. I know many ATOs and their letters and that house means the world to them. It was even sad for me seeing my friends having to move out and then a bunch of disrespectful girls move in. I love you guys. You will be back in no time.

  19. Rebecca L. Says:

They are disrespectful in the sense that they are RENTING the house from the ATO Alumni and then talk shit about ATOs and told girls during rush that they are buying the house. YOU ARE STUPID! Have fun paying them lots and lots of money. I can’t wait until they are kicked out and have no house to go to because they sold it. Sigma Kappa sucks. I hear they also said it was ATO who messed up their crappy float. Just because they do not like you or Sig-Ep doesn’t mean they would do that. I know many Greek houses and just normal students who hate those houses. Sigma Kappa lied to girls and said the ATO HOUSE was theirs. The Sig-Eps burnt Sigma Nu’s composite, broke stuff at ATO, tagged SAE and LXA, and slashed Phi Delts tires. These are more than enough reasons for the entire Greek community to mess up your dumb float. Why aren’t they kicked off campus? Just cause they don’t haze? I support ATO. I wish you guys could still have Cinco-De mAy-T-O

  20. Tedward Says:

“In all serious my friend, what crawled up your a** and died?”

Dare I answer that question beautiful Lindsey!

  21. Omega Tau Olpha Says:

When is the University going to quit being such tight asses and laugh a little. The float was seen before it was part of the parade, and how do you not find the humor in it!!! LIGHTEN UP A LITTLE! There shouldn’t be any more disciplinary actions for what occurred.

  22. Omega Tau Alpha Says:

Hey Timmy Taycher, you should’ve been laying in front of the chicken on saturday

  23. Joe the Plumber Says:

    ATO

  24. Colonel Sanders Says:

I would of prefered extra crispy, some mashed taters, and some extra gravy. Doesn’t gravy sound nice TIM.

  25. Bobo Says:

“Feeding our pledges chicken was the dumbest thing I ever heard. They never even did a formal investigation. It just got out in the media and so everyone believed it.”

Yeah it was the dumbest thing you ever heard, because it was indeed true. I believe they did do a formal investigation, because the pledges that were forced to eat the chicken went to the health center and they found out that way.

“It just got out in the media and everyone believed it?!” Talk about the dumbest thing I ever heard… you really expect me to believe that?

It’s one thing to defend your float, but another to deny that the pledges were getting fed raw chicken. Your indeed telling me a lie that ATO never fed them raw chicken, because they did.

About the sports team… yeah that’s not considered hazing. There’s no rule in the state that says “coaches can’t make players do up downs after practice”. But there are in fact rules against hazing… which ATO has violated. And no, Chris Ault doesn’t force his players to eat raw chicken… because that’s hazing. Do you understand now?… Do I need to make myself even more clear?…. Because I still don’t think you know what hazing is, considering you compared it to a sports practice.

And I like how you name off all these “famous” and “important” people that came from ATO… so what?! I bet their very disappointed now that their house is overtaken by a bunch of Sigma Kappa girls! I would be…

And you say branding is voluntary?… please, we’ve all heard that one before… “Oh you don’t have to do it… but everyone else is…” Get over yourself, ATO hazed and they got into trouble. End of story.

And why are some of you bagging on Sigma Kappa? Just because their in the big ATO house and not having parties? Boo f*cking hoo! Disrespectful girls? Wow buddy, you really expect me to believe that every ATO wasn’t disrespectful?

  26. Grigory Lukin Says:

Wow, you guys (Lindsey, Tedward and Colonel Sanders) are even lower than John McCain’s campaign. Didn’t think it was possible, to be honest. Go Greek, eh?..

  27. Mayo Thompson Says:

Tim, first thing I am on your side so no need to talk to me that way. As far as anti-hazing, I cannot speak for everyone in my organization but I do not haze. As for branding, in my organization it is a choice you make personally, no one makes you get branded.

I’d like to see what UNR’s repsonse is

  28. concerned Says:

Seriously…. Just because somebody shows concern about the image of the greek community, doesn’t mean that they are in anyway personally attacking the organization. Yeah the float was funny, but ATO should have thought about their actions first. Even if the raw chicken hazing was false, is it really funny to make a mockery out of alleged hazing…how the hell does this promote anti-hazing….wow.

  29. chicken coupe Says:

I don’t think enough credit was given to the driver of the float or the co pilot.

Operating a 1986 Mercury Cougar under such stressful conditions is not an easy task.

  30. Mr. Smeeglemyer Says:

    Bobo-

Wow. You are quite possibly the most ignorant person in this forum. Your argument is pure hear-say and hollowness. You sit here and proclaim that you know for a fact that ATO fed their pledges raw chicken and portray this motion that you have evident fact to rely on that this asinine accusation is true. I’m sorry bud, but you are full of shit. As a member of ATO I have the facts and I was there and I can assure you that your fallacy deceives you. Do your research, if you knew the illness the pledges came down with, you would clearly have the knowledge to educate yourself that this illness can be caused by a number of things outside of uncooked chicken. Don’t act like you know all about it you ignorant ass, you clearly have no idea.

Plus, yes we admitted to hazing, that being sleep deprivation and calisthetics, branding; however, you fool, is absolutely voluntary. “oh you don’t have to do it . . . But everyone else is” what the fuck kind of shit is that? Oh that’s so correct cause obviously it hasn’t been being done by anyone for a year and yet practically everyone in the brotherhood on this campus has multiple brands. Clearly, it’s so forceful when many prominent actives for years have 3 and many alumni have nearly 5. Obviously, if you have any kind deductive thought process, you would realiZe that many of the brands are done as an active member. But oh know everyone else is doing it. Man, get real. Your hollow arguement has no room here.

  31. WL Says:

As a member of the non-Greek community, I found some great hilarity in the actions of the former members of ATO on Saturday.

I find it quite disturbing that as educated college students, the thinly veiled sarcasm and wit here isn’t being recognized by most individuals…this is great!

  32. Mike L. Says:

    Bobo,

Sounds to me like you are in Sig-Ep. I think you should get your story straight before making accusations like Timothy over there. The university never did a official investigation. Some pledges went to the health center for their brands. A couple of them went because they had upset stomachs and when they did a test they said it was salmonella. There are other things that can give you salmanella. Here is a list of places that had salmonella outbreaks…..I don’t see any of them shut down. (Alamosa, Colorado Municipal Water System Salmonella Outbreak
Banquet (ConAgra) Pot Pie Salmonella Outbreak
    Black Forest Bakery Salmonella Outbreak
    Brook-Lea Salmonella Outbreak
    Cafe Santa Fe Salmonella Outbreak

The university never came into our house to see if we even had traces of salmonella or chicken. The branding is completely voluntary you incompetient moron. Get that in your head too. Also, I know for a fact that our alumni does not care if Sigma Kappa is in our house because we are charging them us the a**. We are making more than a $100,000 profit on them. Also, it is our house so they can rent it all they want until we come back. I named our alumni because it showed that our house produces men that are very prestigous in the Greater Nevada area and Nationally.

  33. Captain Hooper Says:

This is quite a bit of discussion to have over a homecoming float. Too bad this many people don’t care about things like budget cuts. Tim, maybe you should just drop it? Go back to your duties as ASUN critic who doesn’t contribute in any tangible way to the University. Go back to being the hall monitor of the students, so that administrators will like you.

  34. Lindsey Says:

    Lukin:

your comment was very entertaining… thank you for such a wondrous opinion.
