Fields’ misdemeanor charge dismissed

Nevada basketball player Brandon Fields’ petty larceny misdemeanor charge has been dismissed two weeks after he was cited at the Scheels sports store in Sparks.

“Fields never left the store with anything that didn’t belong to him,” Sparks chief prosecutor Tim Randolph said. “Proof of his involvement with the others was not there beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Fields, along with teammates London Giles and Ahyaro Phillips, were cited on petty larceny misdemeanor charges Oct. 15.

Fields, a junior, was cited because security at Scheels felt there was probable cause to believe he was conspiring with the other two Nevada basketball players, Randolph said.

“(Fields) did not do what he was accused of as evidence of his dismissal,” Fields’ attorney Scott Freeman said. “We are extremely pleased, very satisfied, he’s been vindicated.”

Fields worked at the Nevada Humane Society for 40 hours last weekend in caution of the charges levied against him.

“In conversation between our office and his attorney it was agreed that he would do community service,” Randolph said.

The proof problems in the case along with Fields’ community service led to the dismissal, Randolph said.

As for the other two Nevada basketball players, Giles pleaded guilty to the citation and has since been levied a $457 fine.

Phillips, along with Fields, pleaded not guilty to the charges. Phillips hasn’t received finalization on his case and is still waiting for a court date.

Fields is Nevada’s highest scoring returning player from last season (12.4 points per game). Fields remains indefinitely suspended from the Nevada basketball team by head coach Mark Fox.

Fox couldn’t be immediately reached for comment, but he told Nevada Media Services that the dismissal would not change Fields’ suspension.

Freshmen Phillips and Giles also remain suspended.
