Board may decide to cut east shuttle hours

The Parking and Traffic Board, made up of faculty, staff and students, will decide Dec. 5 whether to cut evening hours for the east campus shuttle service.

The board will vote on a proposal to discontinue the shuttle service past 5:30 p.m., effective next semester.
The route runs chiefly up Evans Avenue, stopping at the Fleischmann Agriculture building, Edmund J. Cain Hall, the football practice fields and the medical school.

The department operated the east campus service until 10 p.m. this semester on a trial basis, determining whether to continue extended hours based on ridership. The bus picks up an average of four people after 5:30 p.m., said Melody Bayfield, director of Parking and Transportation Services.

“It doesn’t make sense to spend $150 a night to pick up four people,” she said.

Bayfield said she encouraged students to use the Campus Escort service, as the extra four students would not overwhelm the service.

One of eight polled passengers said they would likely use campus escort if the east campus shuttle services stopped running in the evening, Bayfield said in her proposal to cut hours.

The other seven said they would be able to use the main shuttle instead.

“Obviously safety is our primary concern,” Ronald Zurek, Vice President of Administration and Finance, said. “We wouldn’t put a proposal like this forward if there weren’t alternatives.”
