Flipside’s Coffee and a Concert Series to continue next semester

Students who want to attend the Coffee and a Concert Series will have for wait until after winter break for more free shows. After a successful run, Flipside Productions is preparing for the next string of performances and promises an even better series.

Although satisfied with this semester’s lineup, Flipside Programming Director Casey Stiteler said he hopes to increase student turnout next semester with some higher profile performers. Flipside will also try to showcase some local talent next semester, he said.

“We can better market and publicize the series,” he said. “We want to focus advertising on an event-by-event basis.”

Flipside will use Facebook to draw students to the concerts, he said.
Ricky De La Rosa, member of the Flipside Concert Committee, also said he was pleased with how the series turned out.

Although Flipside is still in the planning stages for next semester, De La Rosa said he is confident that students will have a lot to look forward to in the future.

“What we’ve seen so far is nothing compared to what we have planned,” he said.

Held Tuesday evenings between Sept. 16 and Oct. 28 at the Starbucks inside the Joe Crowley Student Union, the events entailed a variety of acts.

Stiteler said the series was fundamental in creating what University of Nevada, Reno President Milton Glick calls a “sticky campus.”

“No one really has extra money for concerts, and if we can do anything on campus that’s free for students then we will,” he said. “It was a good opportunity for students to come out to see live performances in an intimate setting at no cost.”

The series kicked off with folk-rocker Tyrone Wells and other such artists as Rocky Votolato.
Concerts typically drew about 50 people. Flipside rearranged tables and chairs in the Starbucks to create a concert-like setting.

“It was cool,” Starbucks Supervisor Roland Boulware said. “It was packed about every night.”
