Deeper than a love story

Despite the fact that the Harry Potter series has owned the hearts of young readers worldwide for years, many have been quick to hail newcomer Stephanie Meyer of “Twilight” fame as “the next J.K. Rowling.” That is quite the disservice to the world Rowling has created in her novels.

The Harry Potter series creates an entire hidden universe that secretly exists alongside the one we all live in without our knowledge. Rowling truly demonstrates her writing talents in bringing the wizardry world to life. Every small aspect has been thought out and described in such intricate detail that the reader is transported into this fantastical world.

Harry Potter readers are not only able to relate to Harry’s struggles with adolescence. They are able to live vicariously through him as he sets out on adventure after adventure in order to defeat the Dark Lord. Harry, a truly realistic teenager, equipped with flaws and all, accidentally becomes the last hope of the wizarding world to be saved from evil, whether he likes it or not.

The Harry Potter story becomes increasingly more complex as it draws closer to its end, with Harry delving deeper into the story of evil Lord Voldemort and his origins. The series not only becomes darker as it goes along — it becomes more thought provoking. The themes reach beyond a young boy with magical powers to center around the power of friendship and love as well as the balance between good and evil.

Though the Twilight series has its attempts at action sequences and dramatic plot twists, it is undeniably just a love story.
