On Tuesday, Nov. 11, The Underground club on Fourth Street was filled to the brim with fluorescent colors, teased hair and trance music as Internet sensation Jeffree Star performed electronica music from his upcoming album with opening acts Teen Hearts, Ultraviolet Sound and Brokencyde.
Teen Hearts kicked off the evening with upbeat music and hand clapping, which got much of the audience moving. There were, however, a few fumbles within their set: The lead singer managed to unplug his microphone and struggled for a few minutes to plug it back in before he could continue the show.
Following Teen Hearts was Ultraviolet Sound, an electronic trio from Los Angeles who came onstage dressed in matching tracksuits. The costumes were appropriate as their music, as well as lead singer Sarah Hudson’s dance moves, seemed as though they would fit very well into a new-age workout video. The group kept the energy going as they called Star onstage to perform “Texxxt Bomb” with them and offered the audience free CDs featuring the song “OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Dancing).”
Screamo-electronica foursome Brokencyde took the stage next. Though their set included elaborate fog machines, colored lights and blindingly bright laser lights, the group played a very short set of songs from their new EP “BC13,” which features gratuitous use of the letters ‘x’ and ‘z’ in song titles. Many concertgoers who had turned out solely to hear them play were upset by the short set and left after their chanting “One more song!” proved futile.
Star finally came onstage with “Womanizer,” the new Britney Spears single, playing in the background. He was wearing a black sequined shirt over his short black dress, his trademark pink hair tied back in pigtails, just a few days short of his 22nd birthday. The self-proclaimed “Queen of the Internet” is promoting his upcoming EP, “Cupcakes Taste Like Violence,” which will be released on December 9th. Star played songs from his 2007 “Plastic Surgery Slumber Party” EP, such as “Ice Cream” and “Straight Boys,” as well as new songs such as “So Fierce” in his overtly sexual set. Hudson briefly rejoined Star on the stage—which was bathed in fluorescent pink lights—to perform “Starstruck.”
For his finale, Star called several audience members onstage—including a boy dressed only in eye shadow, stockings and an official pair of Jeffree Star briefs—to dance during the song “We Want Cunt.” Star very aptly concluded his show with the lyrics, “Go on MySpace and leave me a comment,” before exiting the stage for the evening.
