Campus escort, blue lights keep students safe
When moving to a new place, it’s important to understand the various safety services available.
The University of Nevada, Reno has its own police department and other safety features on campus.
The University of Nevada, Reno Police Department
The UNRPD office is located on the first floor of the Fitzgerald Student Services Building.

Campus Escort
Campus Escort, a free ride service, drives students to destinations either to or from the university within a two-mile radius of campus.
The student-employees drive marked vans. The escort service will not take students to alcohol establishments or drive people who are intoxicated.
The details:
- Call 775-742-6808 for a ride.
- Hours (Aug. 23-Dec. 16 and Jan. 19-May 12): 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday through Saturday
- For more information, visit unr.edu/escort.
Blue Lights
More than 20 blue light towers are around campus for emergency situations, Garcia said.
Pushing the emergency button will illuminate the blue light at the top of the tower and connect students to 911 dispatch who will send appropriate servicemen to the scene.
“It provides for a safer environment,” Garcia said.
He said he advises students to use the blue lights rather than their cell phones if they are in an emergency situation and near a blue light tower.
Safety Tips
Garcia said new students at UNR should be particularly careful because they are outside of their usual comfort zone. Garcia advised students to:
- Be aware of surroundings
- Don’t listen to an iPod or use a phone when walking alone
- Don’t leave your valuables alone, even for a minute
- Don’t leave valuables in vehicle
- Lock doors.
