School officials suspend fraternity

Police are investigating an alleged sexual assault at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house, recently obtained police records show. SAE, the university’s oldest fraternity, is also on interim suspension from Greek activities, Director of Student Conduct Sally Morgan said.

Police responded to a sexual assault call from a 19-year-old female at the SAE chapter house, located at 835 Evans Way, on Nov. 7. University police said they are unable to comment on the case because it is still being investigated.

The suspension, which was instated the week following the Nov. 7 incident, is tied to a “social event” held on the same evening, Mat Neben, the chapter liaison said.

“From what we understand the social event itself is being investigated, not an individual or the fraternity,” Neben said. “That’s the only thing that’s been brought to us and we are trying to iron it out.”

Following the social event in question, alumni forced out SAE President Trenton Arlint because they didn’t believe he was following chapter rules strictly enough, Neben said.

Neben said the University of Nevada, Reno Police Department has called members of the fraternity in for questioning about the social event but university police have not been clear about what they are specifically investigating.

Without a full understanding of the allegations or charges, Neben said members of the fraternity are just trying to comply with the university and police.

“We aren’t looking at a lawyer and are just trying to be as cooperative as possible,” Neben said. “We don’t know what we are trying to protect.”

Until the investigation is cleared, the fraternity is not allowed to participate in Greek events or activities, something that is taking a toll on the morale and brotherhood of the fraternity, Neben said.

Another example of why fraternities are just a worthless pile of scrap metal.

This is sad. I wish George W was still president of the U.S. because suspending the fraternity is too serious of a punishment for such a minor crime. Me and my republican friends will boycott this suspension.
