Be aware of abuse to help end it

Many of the cases the staff and I deal with in the Department of Legal Services are complex. Perhaps none are more difficult than those that involve human suffering.

Our department is limited in our capacity to help, but fortunately there are various other opportunities this spring that those interested in helping our community can take advantage of in order to rectify actions that lead to such suffering.

April serves as both National Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has promoted National Child Abuse Prevention Month every April since the first piece of significant legislation protecting children from abuse was passed in 1974.

Similarly, President Barack Obama recently recognized in a proclamation that April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Several events on campus and in the Reno area will be highlighting the implications of abuse toward women and children. People are paying attention and taking action.

Just a couple weeks ago, sorority Kappa Alpha Theta sold cupcakes on campus in order to draw attention  to the plight of mistreated children in the Reno area.

The proceeds from the sale benefited Court Appointed Special Advocates, a national organization that sets up local volunteers with abused and neglected children who are going through the court system.

Likewise, organizations are gearing up to host various events on campus throughout the month of April that will serve to spotlight sexual assault.

If you are interested in getting involved, join the Facebook group “Sexual Assault Awareness Month” for more details.

Our department staff attempts to help all students who come through our office door but the Counseling Services (www.unr.edu/counseling) can offer assistance as well.

Ultimately, it is essential to note that abuse is not a women’s issue or a children’s issue. It is a community affair. I urge you to take this month to educate yourself and make a difference.

The ASUN legal services office is in Room 350 in the Joe Crowley Student Union and will soon offer free notary services. Drop by with comments, questions or concerns. Reach Maritza Perez at legal@asun.unr.
