All-nighter in Mackay to raise cash for cancer

Those who want to help in the fight against cancer will have the opportunity to assist in the search for a cure. Participants in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life will walk or run around Mackay Stadium in order to raise money for those who suffer from the disease.

The event will take place 6 p.m. Friday and will last for 12 hours. The 48 teams participating have already raised about $23,000. Individuals must pay a $10 registration fee, and all proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. In 2009, participators in Relay for Life raised about $35,000, but the event is expected to raise more money this year.

Gracie Geremia, event chair for Relay for Life, said the relay tripled in participation over the past three years.

“We used to have it in the Virginia City Gym, and it’s really taken off,” she said.

Geremia said the goal of the event is to unite people for a common cause: to fight against cancer. The teams provide their own individual donations and elicit sponsorships, she said.

“Local businesses help sponsor and sometimes they come out to the actual event,” she said. “Usually, people stay out all night.”

Kristen VanCitters, an 18-year-old political science and French major, plans to participate in the relay as a member of Circle K.

“It’s a really good cause,” she said. “We all get really involved. For those of us who know people with cancer, it’s close to our hearts.”
